If your San Francisco itinerary puts Alcatraz on or after October 26, 2026, check the date before you buy another ferry ticket. The National Park Service has scheduled a temporary island closure while the ferry dock is repaired. Alcatraz City Cruises, the authorized island ferry operator, says all island tours from October 26–November 18 are affected. The planned reopening is November 19, subject to change. That qualification matters more than a neat calendar date: the work can move with conditions, so an onward flight should not depend on the island opening exactly as projected.
Which dates are affected?
The operator's current closure notice identifies October 26–November 18 as the period in which Alcatraz Island tours will not operate. The National Park Service expects dock repairs to be completed by November 18. Those are plans, not a guarantee that a tour booked for November 19 will depart. The park explicitly says weather or other factors may change the repair timeline. If your visit is before October 26, normal ticket availability and operating conditions still decide whether you can go; the closure notice does not itself promise an opening on every earlier date. If your visit is November 19 or later, watch for an operator message and check the live schedule again near departure.
The reason for the closure is unusually practical. Visitors reach the island through its ferry dock; replacing pilings that secure that dock prevents the island service from operating during the work. The operator's San Francisco Bay cruise can pass the island, but a passing boat cannot make the cellhouse visit happen. A sightseeing vessel that shows Alcatraz from the water should therefore be described and priced in your itinerary as a different experience, not an Alcatraz Island admission.
If you already hold a direct ticket
For an affected reservation booked directly with Alcatraz City Cruises, the operator says the reservation has been canceled and a refund goes automatically to the original payment method. It asks guests to allow 5–7 business days for processing. That is the closure-specific policy; it is different from deciding voluntarily to cancel an unaffected trip. Check the booking email and payment statement, keep the reservation identifier, and contact the operator if the stated processing period has passed without a resolution. Avoid buying a second ticket merely to force a refund on the first one.
A traveler who bought a package through a tour marketplace, hotel or travel agent has a different contact point. The operator directs third-party customers to the company that sold them the package for their options. That seller may have bundled transport, another attraction or a guided tour with the ferry component. Ask for an itemized explanation of what is canceled, what remains available, and the amount and route of any refund before accepting a substitute. The National Park Service describes a refund and options to reschedule or take a bay cruise for affected guests, but your actual transaction needs to be handled by the seller that charged you.
Should you rebook after the closure?
Alcatraz City Cruises invites flexible visitors to book an available island tour for November 19 or later, subject to availability. Treat that as a new planning choice, not a confirmed repair completion. If you will be in San Francisco for several days after the proposed reopening, a later slot leaves more room for changes than the first possible departure. If you have only one free morning and a flight that afternoon, committing the entire plan to the first possible reopening day creates an avoidable risk. Review the operator notice again before making a nonrefundable change elsewhere in your trip.
For a worked example, suppose your group arrives November 16 and leaves November 21. An Alcatraz ticket for November 17 falls inside the published affected period, so you should expect the closure process rather than go to Pier 33 hoping to board. A November 20 replacement might work if the dock reopens as scheduled and inventory remains. Keep a separate mainland activity for that afternoon until the ferry departure is confirmed. If the tour is the purpose of the trip, choose a travel date with more slack after the proposed reopening rather than gambling on the first date.
Is the Bay Discovery Cruise a replacement?
Only if your goal is to see the island from San Francisco Bay. The operator lists a 90-minute San Francisco Bay Discovery Cruise for October 26–November 1, subject to availability. It passes Alcatraz and other bay landmarks but does not dock on the island. You do not enter the cellhouse, walk the grounds or take the included cellhouse audio tour. The park's visitor guidance says ferry tickets are required for an island visit and that the cellhouse audio tour comes with an island ferry ticket. Those distinctions let you decide whether a water view actually meets the reason you booked.
A bay cruise can still be a sensible option for a traveler with one short San Francisco stay. You can see the island's setting and the Golden Gate Bridge from the water without rearranging the whole itinerary. It is less suitable for someone studying the prison's history or wanting access to exhibits on the island. Do not assume the water-only cruise will remain on sale throughout the full closure; the operator specifically dates this alternative to October 26–November 1. Check availability and the cruise route when you choose it.
How to verify the right seller and departure
The National Park Service points visitors to Alcatraz City Cruises for island ferry tickets. The operator says it is the exclusive authorized commercial ferry service that docks at Alcatraz. Other bay cruises can pass the island, and package sellers can include an authentic Alcatraz admission, but a harbor cruise alone is not proof of a landing. Before payment, look for the actual tour type, date, departure point, and whether island access is included. If a bundle's headline says Alcatraz but its details say “sail around” or “view from the bay,” expect a water-only experience.
For ordinary island visits, the National Park Service recommends advance purchase because tours can sell out, especially around holidays. That advice still applies to dates after reopening, but it does not override the closure. Check the park's specific closure notice and the operator's closure page immediately before travel. If the pages disagree after a schedule change, confirm with the operator holding your booking rather than infer that a general opening-hours page is more current than a specific closure alert.
Keep the rest of the trip flexible
Separate the Alcatraz decision from transport and connectivity planning. A ferry cancellation does not necessarily change your flights, hotel or other San Francisco bookings, and their terms can differ. Save the closure notice and the booking confirmation where you can retrieve them without relying on a signal at the pier. If you are arriving from abroad, check that your phone supports eSIM before buying a travel plan, and compare Roameo destination plans against your trip length and expected data use. Mobile data can help you read live operator messages and rearrange plans, but it cannot turn a water-only cruise into an island visit.
The immediate decision is straightforward. For October 26–November 18, plan on no island tour and follow the refund route for the seller you used. For November 19 onward, treat the reopening as provisional and verify your departure close to the day. If seeing Alcatraz from the water is enough, consider the separately advertised Bay Discovery Cruise only on its listed dates. Those three choices prevent a misleading ticket title or an optimistic reopening date from dictating your entire San Francisco stay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an Alcatraz Island tour run on November 10?
The operator currently lists November 10 inside the October 26–November 18 affected period, so plan for no island tour and check its latest closure notice for changes.
Do direct customers have to request their closure refund?
Alcatraz City Cruises says affected direct-booking refunds are automatic to the original payment method. It asks customers to allow 5–7 business days for processing.
Does the Bay Discovery Cruise include the cellhouse?
No. The operator says the cruise passes Alcatraz but does not dock. Island admission and its cellhouse audio tour are different products.
