Budapest Airport: 100E or 200E for Your City Stop?
The 100E goes directly to central Budapest, while 200E connects to the metro. Compare fares, transfer rules, night service and the stop that fits your stay.

Autumn city breaks make a Budapest arrival deceptively simple: two buses leave Liszt Ferenc International Airport, but their tickets and onward journeys work differently. The Budapest transport authority, BKK, describes the 100E as a direct airport express to Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér. Its 200E is an ordinary city bus that connects with metro M3 during daytime service. The useful question is therefore not which bus looks more official at the curb. It is where your final stop is, whether you can tolerate a transfer, and which fare product will actually cover the trip.
Start with the address, not the bus number
Open your hotel address and find the closest useful public transport stop before buying anything. If you are staying near Deák Ferenc tér, Kálvin tér or the central streets within a manageable walk of either, the 100E usually removes a transfer. BKK puts the airport to city centre journey at about 40 minutes; that is a route description, not a promise for the exact minute you leave arrivals. A queue at the stop, traffic and the walk to your door still count. If your hotel is elsewhere on metro M3, 200E can be more logical because it feeds that corridor rather than taking you into the centre and back out.
For a stay on another metro line, compare the full chain. From 100E you might change at Deák Ferenc tér, where several metro lines meet, but the special airport bus fare does not pay for that second ride. From 200E you change to M3 and may then need another metro connection. The first choice is more comfortable for a central address; the second can be cheaper for someone already holding a valid city pass. Neither choice is automatically best for every hotel labelled “Budapest centre.” A property near a rail station, a bridge crossing or a late-night tram needs its exact door checked on the current route planner.
What the 100E ticket actually buys
As checked in October 2026, BKK prices the standard 100E airport shuttle bus single ticket at 2,500 HUF. It is for one uninterrupted trip on the 100E, not a city network ticket. The operator also lists a 1,000 HUF add-on for holders of specified valid passes: a Budapest pass other than the 15-day pass, a Pest County Pass or a Hungary Pass. That is a conditional discount, not a cheap fare available merely because you intend to buy a pass later. Check that your pass qualifies and is active before selecting the add-on.
BKK says you can purchase and validate the standard ticket at the on-board Pay&GO device with a bank card. The BudapestGO app is another purchase channel. For a mobile ticket, the authority instructs riders to validate before boarding by scanning the code outside the vehicle, or by using the supported NFC interaction, then show the animated confirmation to staff. A purchased ticket sitting unused in the app is not a validated journey. A paper ticket is handled by boarding staff. These steps matter especially when you arrive tired, have several passengers using one phone, or have no mobile connection at the curb.
The operator lists certain free-travel cases, including people over 65 with proof of age and children under 14 with a Hungarian student ID. Those are specific conditions, not a general “all children ride free” rule for visitors. If a family member may qualify, read the current BKK conditions rather than assuming an overseas school card works. For everyone else, budget the normal fare unless your qualifying pass is already in hand.
Why 200E can be cheaper, and where the saving disappears
The 200E follows ordinary BKK ticket rules. A regular single ticket is accepted on 200E, but BKK says a single ticket covers one vehicle and cannot be transferred to a bus or metro. If you ride 200E and then M3 with ordinary singles, you need a validated ticket for each leg. BKK's current price list shows 500 HUF per advance-purchased single, so that worked two-vehicle example is 1,000 HUF before any later ride. The saving against a standard 100E ticket is real for that example, but it buys a transfer and more time navigating the system.
Do not reverse the fare rules. A 100E airport shuttle ticket is not valid on 200E, and an ordinary city single ticket is not valid on 100E. The fares are tied to the service, not merely to the airport. BKK also offers time-based tickets and travelcards; their transfer rules differ from those of a single. If you plan several trips on your arrival day, compare the current product conditions in BudapestGO rather than multiplying a one-ride price without considering the rest of your itinerary.
Consider a traveler landing for a hotel near an M3 station beyond the centre. If the direct 100E would require a second paid ride after Deák Ferenc tér, its effective journey is a special fare plus another ticket. The 200E-to-M3 chain needs two ordinary singles in the simple case. That makes 200E a strong value choice if the traveler can make the connection comfortably. Now change the example: a traveler with two large cases staying five minutes from Kálvin tér. The 100E removes a transfer and a platform change. The money saved on 200E may not be worth the extra handling. The decision depends on the door, luggage and arrival hour, not a slogan about express travel.
Landing late changes the route, not the fare principle
BKK states that both 100E and 200E operate around the clock. Its 100E page describes a thinner night frequency than daytime service, averaging about every 30–40 minutes at night. The 200E remains available, but the onward connection may change when M3 is closed: BKK's airport guidance shows night bus links instead of assuming a metro is running. Check the journey planner for the actual date and time, particularly if your flight lands close to a service change. A route that is straightforward at 15:00 may involve a different transfer at 01:00.
If a night connection adds a long outdoor wait or a final walk you do not want, compare a licensed taxi or other door-to-door transport on the night itself. This article does not quote a taxi fare because traffic, destination and booking method change it. The bus fare comparison still helps you identify the minimum public-transport cost before paying for convenience. If your flight is delayed, re-check your route after baggage collection rather than following a saved afternoon screenshot.
A practical arrival sequence
Before departure, save your hotel address in a map app and note the nearest actual stop, not just the district name. At arrivals, load the current BKK journey planner and enter that stop. Confirm that it still recommends 100E or 200E, and read any service notices. Choose the ticket for the line you are about to board. If using 100E, make the bank-card tap or mobile validation at the correct point; if using 200E, validate the ordinary ticket and prepare the valid product needed for the onward metro or night bus. Keep the proof of validation available through the journey.
A data connection helps with route changes and digital validation. If you are using an eSIM, set it up before leaving reliable airport Wi-Fi and confirm your device can use it; check eSIM compatibility before buying a travel plan. Roameo supplies connectivity plans and does not operate either bus. Its plan prices and network behaviour are separate from BKK fares, so do not treat the presence of a phone signal as evidence that a transport ticket was validated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 100E ticket valid on metro M3?
No. BKK defines the airport shuttle single as one uninterrupted 100E trip. Buy a separate valid city ticket or use an applicable pass for a metro ride after the bus.
Can I use the 100E ticket on the 200E instead?
No. BKK explicitly separates the special airport shuttle fare from 200E, which uses ordinary ticket and pass rules. Match your ticket to the vehicle you board.
Which bus should I take after midnight?
Both lines run around the clock according to BKK, but the connection beyond 200E may be a night bus rather than metro M3. Enter your actual landing time and hotel stop in the current planner before committing.
