Frankfurt Terminal 1–Terminal 3 Transfer Guide
Use Frankfurt Airport’s free SkyLine by day and terminal shuttle overnight. This guide resolves the published 22:00–23:00 overlap conservatively at night.
Travel tips
At a glance
- Day connection
- Free SkyLine train between Terminals 1 and 3
- SkyLine hours
- Published as 04:00–23:00
- Train frequency
- Every 2–3 minutes during published hours
- Night connection
- Shuttle bus is published for 22:00–05:00
- Planning buffer
- Add at least 45 minutes beyond airline deadlines
Frankfurt Airport’s official orientation guidance makes the main choice simple: use the free SkyLine train between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 during the day, and use the terminal shuttle bus overnight. The page currently publishes SkyLine operation from 04:00 to 23:00, every 2–3 minutes, while also saying the bus is available from 22:00 to 05:00.
The late-night boundary
| Clock time | Conservative choice | What the airport publishes |
|---|---|---|
| 04:00–21:59 | SkyLine | Train operating window |
| 22:00–22:59 | Check live signs; accept either official mode | Published train and bus windows overlap |
| 23:00–03:59 | Shuttle bus | Outside the published SkyLine window |
| At 04:00–05:00 | Follow the live terminal signs | Published overnight bus window overlaps the returning train window |
Do not “correct” the overlap yourself. It may represent a handover period, but the official orientation page does not explain it. In the overlap, follow live airport signs and staff instructions. If the connection depends on one exact departure, verify the operating notice again on the travel day.
Direction-by-direction terminal map
| Direction | Daytime path | Overnight path |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal 1 → Terminal 3 | Follow terminal signs to the SkyLine in the Terminal 3 direction. | Go to the signed shuttle stop in the arrivals area and take the terminal bus. |
| Terminal 3 → Terminal 1 | Follow signs to the SkyLine station directly in front of Terminal 3. | Use the signed shuttle stop in the arrivals area for Terminal 1. |
The airport’s Terminal 3 page repeats that the SkyLine is free, operates every 2–3 minutes from 04:00 to 23:00 and is replaced by a shuttle outside those hours. That is the controlling mode decision; a generic city-transit planner may not show the internal terminal handover clearly.
How much time to budget
The airport describes the SkyLine trip between Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 as about eight minutes on a current transfer information page. Eight minutes is not a safe connection budget. It excludes finding the station, waiting, walking from the stop, security or passport formalities, baggage handling and any airline deadline.
Add at least 45 minutes beyond the airline’s own minimum or reporting deadline for the terminal change itself, and add more overnight. This 45-minute allowance is a conservative editorial buffer, not an airport promise. A passenger who must collect bags, check in again or clear controls needs a larger plan based on the operating airlines’ instructions.
A terminal shuttle does not protect a self-transfer. Separate tickets, baggage collection and check-in deadlines remain the traveller’s responsibility unless the airlines explicitly say otherwise.
Worked late-night examples
Landing at Terminal 1 at 21:40
If you reach the public terminal route before 22:00, follow SkyLine signs. If baggage or formalities push the actual terminal change into the 22:00–23:00 overlap, check the live display rather than walking past an available shuttle because a saved article said “train.”
Repositioning from Terminal 3 at 00:30
The published train window has ended, so plan for the shuttle bus from the Terminal 3 arrivals area. Do not budget around the train’s daytime 2–3-minute frequency. The overnight wait and the walk at Terminal 1 both need margin.
Keep the transfer resilient
- Confirm the operating terminal for both flights on the airline or airport display.
- Follow the airport’s signs; do not assume a map screenshot captures temporary routing.
- Keep baggage and check-in deadlines separate from the terminal travel time.
- Save the Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 routes offline before landing.
- Recheck the official page inside the 22:00–23:00 overlap.
If you need mobile access to airline alerts and airport maps, compare current Germany eSIM plans and verify your handset on the compatibility page. Keep boarding documents offline too; mobile service is preparation, not a protected connection.
