A suitcase needs an oversized-baggage seat reservation on the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen when its length, width and height total 161–250 cm—but that sum is not the whole boarding test. For ordinary personal-effects baggage, JR Central also limits each piece to 30 kg or less, sets a maximum length of 200 cm and allows up to two pieces free. Check all three limits before choosing a seat.

Check every controlling limit first

  • Number of pieces: up to two ordinary pieces of baggage may be carried free; umbrellas, walking sticks and handbags do not count toward that allowance.
  • Weight: each ordinary piece must weigh 30 kg or less.
  • Longest side: each ordinary piece must be no longer than 200 cm.
  • Three-side total: add the external length, width and height of each piece. A total up to 160 cm does not trigger the oversized-baggage seat rule; 161–250 cm does; over 250 cm cannot be brought on board under the ordinary baggage rule.
  • Network scope: this article's seat decision is for the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen. JR Central's FAQ says the reservation requirement also applies on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, but not on conventional lines.
  • Seat and train restriction: oversized baggage cannot be taken to an unreserved seat or a reserved seat that does not offer the appropriate oversized-baggage space. Availability varies by train and car.
  • Special-item exceptions: the ordinary oversized-baggage rule does not apply in the same way to strollers, sports equipment or musical instruments. A reservation is still required if you want to use an oversized-baggage area or compartment. JR also publishes separate exceptions for wheelchairs and certain portable personal effects.
  • Booking deadline: reserve the correct seat before boarding. JR Central says these reserved seats normally become available one month in advance; if they are sold out, choose another train.

A 161–250 cm total therefore answers only the seat-space question. A piece that weighs more than 30 kg or has a side longer than 200 cm fails another ordinary-baggage limit even if its three-side total is below 250 cm.

The complete measuring worksheet

Measure each suitcase at its longest external points and weigh it:

  1. Length: ____ cm
  2. Width: ____ cm
  3. Height: ____ cm
  4. Total: length + width + height = ____ cm
  5. Longest single side: ____ cm
  6. Weight: ____ kg
Worked suitcaseOther checksDecision
75 + 50 + 34 = 159 cmLongest side 75 cm; 23 kgWithin the ordinary limits and at or below 160 cm: no oversized-baggage seat reservation is required.
77 + 50 + 34 = 161 cmLongest side 77 cm; 24 kgWithin the ordinary limits and inside the 161–250 cm band: reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
201 + 25 + 24 = 250 cmLongest side 201 cm; 25 kgThe three-side total is not over 250 cm, but the longest side exceeds 200 cm: it does not pass the ordinary carry-on limits.
111 + 80 + 60 = 251 cmLongest side 111 cm; 29 kgOver the 250 cm total: it cannot be brought on board under the ordinary baggage rule.
77 + 50 + 34 = 161 cmLongest side 77 cm; 31 kgThe size calls for a reserved baggage seat, but the weight exceeds the 30 kg limit.

The boundaries matter. A 160 cm total is not oversized under the published summary; a 161 cm total is. Do not round down, and include protruding handles or wheels when they are part of the suitcase's external size.

Decision path: seat, storage or forwarding

  1. Does every ordinary piece meet the two-piece, 30 kg, 200 cm longest-side and 250 cm total limits? If not, do not continue to the seat test as if size alone made it acceptable. Arrange forwarding or another suitable transport plan.
  2. Is the three-side total 160 cm or less? You do not need an oversized-baggage seat reservation. JR Central says small and medium baggage can use the overhead racks or foot area; if the shape or weight makes those difficult, it recommends reserving a suitable baggage seat.
  3. Is the total 161–250 cm? Reserve a “seat with an oversized baggage area” or another eligible oversized-baggage seat option offered for your train when buying the ticket.
  4. Were you planning to use an unreserved car or an ordinary reserved seat without that space? Change the plan. Those seats do not satisfy the oversized-baggage requirement.
  5. Are the eligible seats sold out? Select another train with an available oversized-baggage seat rather than boarding with an unsuitable seat.
  6. Are you carrying a stroller, sports item, musical instrument or wheelchair? Stop using the ordinary-suitcase path and read the relevant exception on the official page.

How to reserve the correct seat

JR Central's official luggage guide gives three booking paths. At a JR station ticket office, tell the staff member you need a seat with an oversized baggage area. At a reserved-seat ticket machine, select that seat type. Online, select “Seat with an oversized baggage area” through a supported reservation service; the guide names the official SmartEX service among the online options.

The oversized-baggage designation does not add a surcharge beyond the reserved seat price. By contrast, bringing 161–250 cm baggage without the required reservation can trigger a ¥1,000 baggage fee, and the conductor decides where it must be stored. Paying that fee is not an alternative booking strategy: if suitable space is unavailable, the official guidance says you may be asked to reserve another train.

Do not book an ordinary unreserved seat and assume the space behind the last row is free luggage space. The designated oversized-baggage area belongs to passengers who reserved the corresponding seats.

Bottom line

For each ordinary suitcase, confirm no more than two pieces, 30 kg or less, a longest side no greater than 200 cm and a three-side total no greater than 250 cm. Only then use the seat threshold: up to 160 cm needs no oversized-baggage seat reservation, while 161–250 cm does. If another limit fails, or if the item belongs to a special category, use the official exception or arrange forwarding instead of relying on the three-side total alone.
