Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre — Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre · Newgrange
Planning a December 2026 visit to Newgrange after reading about the winter-solstice lottery? A normal winter visit has a different booking route. The Office of Public Works visitor page says its November-to-February public tour is Newgrange Tour + Exhibition, including the chamber, and that winter tour dates from 2 November to 31 December open online seven days ahead at midnight Irish time. A standard timed tour is a way to see the monument in winter; it is not a seat inside the chamber for the solstice sunrise.
Choose the tour that actually operates in winter
Brú na Bóinne is the heritage landscape containing Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth, but that three-name site title does not mean every ticket visits every monument. For tour dates from 2 November through 28 February, the public page lists Newgrange Tour + Exhibition, which includes guided entry to the Newgrange chamber. Knowth is not part of that winter tour. In the longer season, the main tour includes Knowth and Newgrange; a reader who saw a summer itinerary and simply copied it into December would expect a stop that the winter offer does not provide.
The OPW's 2026 visitor catalogue describes the winter Newgrange tour as approximately two hours. It includes the Visitor Centre exhibition, shuttle transport and a guided monument visit with chamber access. The catalogue also explains that all monument tours start at the Visitor Centre, with time for the exhibition before departure. In practical terms, navigate to the Visitor Centre at Donore, near Drogheda, rather than trying to arrive directly at the mound for your booked time. The public visitor page explicitly says access to Newgrange is by guided tour only.
Calculate the seven-day booking window correctly
The OPW page says winter dates from 2 November to 31 December are released seven days ahead at midnight Irish time. If you want a regular visit on 16 November, count back seven calendar days to 9 November and check the official booking link at the start of that Irish calendar day. That is a planning calculation from the published rule, not a promise of available seats. Local time matters: a traveler checking from another time zone should convert midnight in Ireland on the relevant date rather than assuming their own midnight is the release moment. Ireland changes between summer and winter time; use the local Irish time shown for the booking date.
The page separately lists 1 January to 1 March as a seven-day window and 1 April to 1 November as a thirty-day window. Because the published table does not specify every March date in the same line, this article does not invent a March release rule. For an early-spring visit, use the official booking calendar and current OPW guidance rather than extrapolating from the winter example. The sale periods can be a moving operational detail, so a reminder should link to the booking page itself, not to an unofficial resale listing.
If the intended day appears sold out, the OPW says cancellations may return online at any stage and suggests checking 08:30–09:30 and 15:00–16:00 Irish time. These are useful checking periods, not a second guaranteed ticket drop. A traveler who cannot shift dates should treat the tour as unavailable until a legitimate slot appears. The same official page warns that capacity is very limited and pre-booking is essential; arriving at the Visitor Centre without a monument ticket can mean long delays or no monument access.
Do not confuse three different experiences
First, Newgrange Tour + Exhibition is the regular winter product. It includes the chamber but gives no entitlement to the naturally illuminated solstice morning inside it. Second, the Visitor Centre exhibition-only experience remains a fallback if monument tickets cannot be obtained. It teaches the site's archaeology and, according to the 2026 catalogue, contains a partial chamber replica with a simulation of the winter sunlight effect. The OPW says advance booking is not required for Visitor Centre-only admission, though opening and capacity should still be checked. Third, the winter-solstice morning arrangements are a special programme. The public site says regular tour options are suspended on 19–23 December and opening begins earlier on those mornings.
That distinction can save an expensive itinerary error. A traveler may reasonably want the archaeology and chamber but have no wish to pursue a solstice sunrise; the regular tour suits that goal on a date when offered. Another traveler may accept the exhibition simulation if all monument tours are unavailable. Someone specifically seeking sunrise illumination cannot infer access from a conventional winter ticket. The existing solstice lottery guide addresses that separate question; this article addresses the routine winter visit and booking clock.
Check the public ticket category at checkout
The OPW's public visitor page labels a link as 2026 admission charges, but the linked PDF has an older filename; a separate 2026 trade catalogue describes a priced tour for organised groups. Those sources do not establish a reliable current public checkout total for an independent traveler. Use the official booking link to inspect the ticket category and final amount for the date you can actually visit. This matters especially if you are comparing a monument tour with Visitor Centre-only admission: they are distinct products, and a displayed price without the product name can make a cheap exhibition ticket look like a chamber visit.
Make the choice by experience first. A Newgrange Tour + Exhibition ticket is the route to a scheduled shuttle and guided Newgrange chamber access on an operating winter date. Visitor Centre-only admission covers the exhibition, including its partial chamber replica and simulated solstice effect, but does not buy passage to the monument. If one option is sold out, do not purchase the other under the impression that staff can convert it at the site. Confirm the age or concession category required for each traveler and read the actual basket before payment; this article intentionally avoids passing a trade-group tariff off as the public rate.
Plan the physical visit, not just the ticket
The catalogue notes a roughly 300-metre walk from parking to the Visitor Centre and another roughly 300 metres from the Visitor Centre to the shuttle area. The winter tour includes time outdoors with no shelter, gravel paths and steps into a low, narrow chamber. It says the monument portion is unsuitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters, while the Visitor Centre itself is accessible. The public page asks visitors with mobility concerns or other special-assistance needs to contact the site before booking. This matters when deciding whether to buy a monument tour for every member of a group: a ticket does not remove the geometry of the passage.
All visitors, including children and infants, need a ticket for the monument tour, and unaccompanied visitors under 18 are not admitted. Groups of 15–30 are directed to arrange a group slot by email rather than treating the ordinary checkout as a group reservation. Tickets from third-party resellers are not valid, according to the OPW, which warns of lookalike websites. Begin at the official Heritage Ireland page and follow its Book Online link.
A winter day worked through
Suppose two adults have one night near Drogheda and hope to visit on 16 November. They set a reminder for midnight Irish time on 9 November, check the legitimate booking calendar, and book two Newgrange Tour + Exhibition tickets if a suitable slot exists. They verify the public checkout total for their chosen ticket category, leave room for transport and any payment charges, and use the Visitor Centre as the actual arrival point. Because the tour is about two hours and includes outdoor sections, they choose the time with daylight and suitable onward travel rather than assuming a late slot leaves unlimited time at the mound.
If those tickets are unavailable, they check returned inventory during the OPW's suggested morning and afternoon periods. They can also decide in advance whether the exhibition-only option would still justify the journey. If their goal is a chamber visit, the honest answer may be to change the day. If their goal is to learn the story of the passage tomb and see the simulated sunlight effect, the Visitor Centre could still be useful. This decision tree is more reliable than buying a ticket from an unofficial site that claims privileged access.
Operating dates, connectivity and final checks
The OPW lists Visitor Centre hours of 09:00–16:15 in November and December, but tour times are the ones shown in the booking system. It lists closure from 24 to 27 December inclusive and on 1 January, with the special 19–23 December solstice-morning arrangements described above. Weather can alter monument access at short notice. Recheck the official page shortly before setting out and keep the booking details available without depending on a weak signal at the monument. If your phone will handle maps or ticket email while travelling in Ireland, compare Ireland connectivity options and confirm eSIM compatibility; a mobile data plan is a travel aid, not part of the heritage admission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the regular winter ticket include Knowth?
No. The OPW's November-to-February Newgrange Tour + Exhibition includes Newgrange and its chamber, while Knowth is not included.
Can I buy a winter tour from a reseller after official tickets sell out?
The OPW says third-party ticket sales for Brú na Bóinne are unauthorised and such tickets are invalid. Watch the official booking calendar for cancellations instead.
Will a normal December tour put me in the chamber at sunrise?
No such entitlement is stated for a regular tour. Solstice mornings have special arrangements, and regular tours are suspended on 19–23 December.
