Odori Park — Odori Park · Tsudome · Susukino ice-sculpture venue · New Chitose Airport
On 24 September 2026, the useful planning fact is already fixed: the 77th Sapporo Snow Festival will run from 4–11 February 2027, and all three main venues operate on the same eight days. The programme is still being filled in, but the official committee has confirmed five large snow sculptures at Odori, the return of Tsudome and a three-day Snow Sports Park immediately after the festival. If Sapporo is on your winter list, this is the point to reserve a room—not to wait for December's sculpture announcements.
This guide separates what is confirmed from what is not. It gives you the official venue hours, the new nightly accommodation tax, current airport and subway costs, and a route that does not waste half a day crossing the city. Yen conversions use the European Central Bank's 23 September 2026 reference rates, under which JPY 1 was about USD 0.00633. Treat the dollar figures as planning estimates, not card-settlement quotes.
What is confirmed for the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival?
The festival committee's 2027 event outline confirms Odori Park, Tsudome and Susukino as the three venues. Admission is Free at all three venues. Odori will stretch from Nishi 1-chome to Nishi 11-chome, a route of about 1.1 kilometres, and its plan places the five large sculptures at 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10-chome. Nishi 2-chome is assigned to the Sapporo International Art Festival, while Nishi 11-chome hosts the international snow-sculpture contest.
The committee has not yet named the subjects of those large sculptures or published a full stage schedule. Its venue pages say the 2027 details will be updated from mid-December 2026. That distinction matters: book the trip around the confirmed dates, but do not build a minute-by-minute itinerary from the remaining 2026 material still visible on some official pages.
| Venue | What to go for | Confirmed hours |
|---|---|---|
| Odori Park | Five large snow sculptures, smaller works, winter attractions and the international contest | Open park; lights Until 10:00 PM |
| Tsudome | Snow play and family-oriented outdoor activities, with indoor rest and food areas | 10:00 AM–4:00 PM |
| Susukino | Ice sculptures along the main street | Open street; lights until 11:00 PM, or 10:00 PM on the final night |
The separate Sapporo Snow Sports Park 2027 is scheduled for 12–14 February at Daiwa House Premist Dome. It is a useful extension if your return date is flexible, but it is not a fourth festival venue and it begins only after the main event ends.
When should you book?
September is early enough to choose the trip on dates rather than on whichever beds remain. The best practical sequence is to reserve cancellable accommodation first, then watch the official festival site in mid-December for sculpture subjects, event times and any venue-specific notices. No ticket is needed for general admission, so there is no festival pass to chase.
For a first visit, three nights is the useful minimum. It gives you one daylight walk through Odori, one evening return after the lights come on, and a separate block for Tsudome. Four nights gives weather room and makes the post-festival Snow Sports Park possible for visitors staying beyond 11 February. A hotel near Sapporo Station is strongest for the airport train; Odori is strongest for repeat festival walks; Susukino suits travellers who want the ice display and restaurants at the door.
Do not pay a reseller for a “festival entry ticket.” The official festival questions page says general admission is free at every venue. Paid food, rides or other activities may exist, but the 2027 list and prices have not yet been published.
Budget the accommodation tax added in 2026
Sapporo introduced its accommodation tax on 1 April 2026, and Hokkaido levies its own tax at the same time. The city's official rate table combines both charges. For a room costing less than JPY 20,000 per person per night, the total is JPY 300, about USD 1.90. From JPY 20,000 to below JPY 50,000, the total is JPY 600, about USD 3.80. At JPY 50,000 or more, it is JPY 1,000, about USD 6.33.
In short, budget JPY 300–1,000 per person nightly on top of the room rate. The tax applies to guests in licensed hotels, inns, simple lodging and registered private accommodation, and the property collects it. Booking before the tax began does not exempt a stay after the start date, so a 2027 festival reservation falls squarely inside the system.
How to move between the three venues
Start at Odori in daylight. Walk west to east or east to west through the full 11-block site, then leave time to warm up indoors. Return after dark for the lighting rather than trying to make one continuous visit last from morning to 10:00 PM. The park sits directly over Odori subway station, served by the Namboku, Tozai and Toho lines.
Put Tsudome on a different morning. Take the Toho Line to Sakaemachi; the festival's official guidance says the venue is about a 15-minute walk from the station, with a shuttle bus also operating. Activities can stop accepting visitors early when crowded, so arriving near the 10:00 AM opening is more useful than squeezing it in late afternoon.
Save Susukino for the evening. It is immediately outside Susukino Station on the Namboku Line, and its ice sculptures stay illuminated an hour later than Odori on most nights. Pairing Odori and Susukino after dark is easy; adding Tsudome to the same continuous outing creates needless backtracking.
Current city-subway fares run from JPY 210 to JPY 380 per ride, roughly USD 1.33–2.41. The subway-only day ticket is JPY 830, about USD 5.26, while the weekend-and-holiday Donichika pass is JPY 520, about USD 3.29. The Sapporo transport bureau also accepts major Japanese interoperable IC cards including Kitaca, Suica, PASMO and ICOCA. Compare the pass with your actual rides; Odori and Susukino are close enough that walking may beat a second fare.
New Chitose Airport to Sapporo
JR Hokkaido's Rapid Airport train is the cleanest default. The current fare is JPY 1,230 non-reserved, about USD 7.79, from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo. The official airport-train page lists up to six services an hour during the day, with the fastest special rapid taking 36 minutes and a standard rapid as little as 37 minutes.
A reserved U Seat adds JPY 1,000, about USD 6.33, or JPY 800, about USD 5.07, with the specified ticketless product. That premium buys an assigned seat and luggage space; it is not required to board. The airport station is connected beneath the terminal, so you can reach the train without taking luggage onto an icy pavement.
Check the live timetable before flying. JR currently advertises a 23:21 departure from the airport, but it also warns that the train leaves on time even when an incoming flight is delayed. A late arrival therefore still needs a backup plan.
Dress for ice, not just for photographs
The festival's own weather and clothing guidance gives February an average temperature of -2.3°C. That average does not describe the wind or the time spent standing still after dark. Wear a real winter outer layer over a sweater and base layer, plus gloves, a hat and ear protection. Keep a warm indoor stop between long outdoor sessions.
Footwear is the detail most likely to decide whether the day is enjoyable. The official advice says roads are often frozen and recommends winter soles with grooves. Slip-on traction cleats are sold around the festival, convenience stores and stations for about JPY 1,000, approximately USD 6.33. Buy them before your first long walk if your boots do not already grip on polished ice.
A small power bank belongs inside an inner pocket because cold can shorten usable battery life. Keep the route, hotel address and transport information available offline as well. For data, compare Japan eSIM plans before departure and check your handset on Roameo's compatibility page; network experience can vary by location, congestion, plan and device.
Entry paperwork for Japan
Entry rules depend on your passport and residence, so do not copy another traveller's checklist. If your passport needs a visa for Japan, consult the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for where you live. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says its eVISA covers eligible residents of specified countries and regions for a single-entry tourism stay of up to 90 days, with shorter permitted stays for some nationalities.
The official eVISA instructions also contain an easy-to-miss airport rule: the visa issuance notice must be displayed online. A screenshot, printed copy or downloaded PDF is not accepted as the notice. That is a practical reason to arrange working data before reaching airline check-in, while still carrying the rest of your documents in the format your airline and immigration authority require.
A simple three-night plan
On arrival day, take the airport train, leave your bags and walk Odori once after dark. On the full middle day, reach Tsudome for 10:00 AM, return to central Sapporo to warm up, and see Susukino's ice sculptures in the evening. Use the final full day for Odori in daylight, the International Snow Sculpture Contest area at Nishi 11-chome and a second look at whichever work changed most under the lights.
That plan leaves deliberate gaps. Snow, queues and icy walking make a tightly stacked city itinerary fragile. The festival is best when you can step indoors, change a route and return to a sculpture after dark without feeling that a prepaid attraction slot is collapsing.
