Türkiye IMEI Registration for a Short Tourist Trip

A foreign phone may be used for 120 days from entry without IMEI registration in Türkiye. Learn when that answers a short trip and why a new SIM or eSIM is separate.

For an ordinary short tourist trip, a visitor does not need to register a foreign phone immediately. Türkiye's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) says a phone brought from abroad may be used without registration for 120 days from entry into Türkiye. If it is not registered within that period, the unregistered device is closed to communication.

The rule concerns the handset's electronic identity, or IMEI. It is separate from buying mobile service. Installing a local SIM or travel eSIM does not register the phone's IMEI and does not extend the official 120-day period.

The short-trip decision

Your situationPractical answer
Your entire use of the foreign handset in Türkiye remains within 120 days from entryBTK says it may be used without registration during that period.
You expect to keep using it after that periodDo not rely on a new SIM or eSIM. Check whether you have a registration right and complete the official device process in time.
You are unsure how a previous visit or prior registration affects the recordUse the official registration-right enquiry or contact BTK; do not assume that another border crossing resets the clock.
You cannot use the e-Devlet registration pathDo not infer eligibility from nationality alone. Ask BTK which lawful route applies to your identity and status.

Prepare the device before departure

  1. Dial *#06#. BTK identifies this as the way to display the phone's IMEI. Save the number privately; do not post it or put it in a public travel document.
  2. Record the entry date that controls this trip. BTK states that the 120 days run from entry into Türkiye.
  3. Separate service from registration. Decide whether you will use roaming, a physical SIM or an eSIM, but treat that as a connectivity purchase rather than an IMEI registration step.
  4. If your use may pass 120 days, check your registration right early. BTK links to the official e-Devlet IMEI registration-right enquiry and also gives its consumer contact number, 120.

The 120-day rule is not a promise that every phone works with every Turkish network or plan. The handset still needs compatible network technology, and a travel eSIM still requires an eSIM-capable, unlocked device.

Why e-Devlet is not a universal tourist instruction

BTK says the standard e-Devlet registration route is for people who have a Turkish identity number or foreigner identity number and can obtain an e-Devlet password. That is an identity-and-status condition, not a simple nationality list. A short-stay visitor should not be told that every foreign passport holder can complete online registration.

BTK also says the entry document used for registration must not have been used for another device registration during the relevant prior period, and the registration right is subject to timing conditions. Because those conditions concern the individual record, a traveller considering a stay beyond 120 days should use the official enquiry rather than guessing from another visitor's experience.

The official page contains an old fee example labelled for 2020. It is not a current price, so this guide does not repeat it as today's registration charge. Check the live official process if registration is actually necessary.

Buying a plan does not change the IMEI clock

A physical SIM and an eSIM are ways to attach service to a device. IMEI registration is the separate government record for the handset. Replacing one plan with another may change the provider or data allowance, but it does not turn an unregistered IMEI into a registered one.

For a visit that fits within the official 120-day unregistered-use period, compare current Türkiye eSIM plans only after checking the phone on Roameo's eSIM compatibility page. For a longer stay, settle registration eligibility first; buying extra connectivity cannot prevent the unregistered device from being closed to communication when the official period ends.

The useful answer

A short-stay tourist normally does not need to register a foreign phone's IMEI before using it in Türkiye, provided the use remains within 120 days from entry. Dial *#06# before travel, keep the IMEI private, and remember that the device-registration clock is separate from the SIM or eSIM you buy. If the stay may run longer, use BTK's official registration-right enquiry instead of assuming the online route is open to every visitor.
