Yosemite National Park — Yosemite National Park · Yosemite Valley
No: you do not need a timed entry reservation to drive into Yosemite National Park in 2026. The National Park Service announced that it will not use a season-wide timed reservation system this year after reviewing 2025 traffic, parking and visitor-use patterns. That removes one booking step, but it does not remove the entrance charge, overnight reservations or permits for particular activities.
What you need for an ordinary day visit by car
- Do not buy a 2026 timed-entry slot. There is no entrance reservation to obtain for a routine day visit, according to Yosemite's official 2026 entrance-reservation notice.
- Plan for the entrance charge. The current NPS fees page lists a $35 private vehicle pass, valid for seven consecutive days. Entrance stations accept credit, debit or mobile payment; the park does not accept cash.
- Check whether the nonresident fee applies. NPS says each non-US resident aged 16 or older pays an additional $100 unless admitted with an Annual or America the Beautiful Pass. This is based on residency, not nationality alone, and is separate from timed entry.
- Check current conditions before setting out. No reservation does not mean no congestion, closure or seasonal road issue.
An entrance pass pays the admission charge. A timed-entry reservation controls when a vehicle may enter. Yosemite has the former in 2026 but not the latter.
Reservations and permits that still exist
| Your plan | What the 2026 no-timed-entry rule means |
|---|---|
| Drive in for the day | No entrance reservation is required; the applicable entrance fee still applies. |
| Stay in a campground or lodge | You still need the relevant overnight booking. The no-timed-entry rule does not create a place to sleep. |
| Backpack overnight | A wilderness permit is still required. |
| Hike Half Dome when cables are up | A Half Dome permit is still required. |
The park's permits and reservations page keeps these categories separate. A day visitor should not buy an entrance reservation that does not exist, while an overnight visitor or permit-controlled hiker should not treat open vehicle access as permission for a campsite or trail.
Weekday versus busy-day arrival
NPS found that most weekdays in 2025 maintained available parking, stable traffic flow and visitation within operational capacity. For 2026 it therefore recommends preferring a weekday and checking current conditions, while planning especially carefully for weekends and holidays.
| Choice | How to plan |
|---|---|
| Weekday visit | This is the park's favoured congestion choice. Check conditions, start with the place you most want to see and keep an alternative outside Yosemite Valley. |
| Weekend or holiday | No timed entry is needed, but plan the trip early, monitor road and congestion updates and expect active parking management. |
The park says it will use real-time traffic monitoring, active parking management, staffing at key intersections and visitor alerts instead of a season-wide reservation system. It also encourages alternatives beyond Yosemite Valley, including Tuolumne Meadows, Wawona and Hetch Hetchy. Those are congestion-management suggestions, not guaranteed parking or road access.
The useful bottom line
For a normal 2026 day trip by car, bring a valid way to pay the applicable entrance charge and check conditions shortly before departure; do not search for a timed-entry reservation. If your trip includes sleeping in the park, backpacking overnight or hiking Half Dome when the cables are installed, complete that separate booking or permit process.
