Airport Wi-Fi connected but the login page will not open?
Public airport Wi-Fi can show a connected icon before internet access is granted. A sign-in or terms page may still be waiting, which matters if you are trying to download your travel eSIM.
Portal recovery
Join the right network
Confirm its exact name using airport signage or staff.
Open the portal
Use the phone's Wi-Fi sign-in prompt or a browser page.
Test access
Load a normal website before returning to eSIM setup.
Confirm the network itself
Look for the airport's official Wi-Fi name on its website, signs or information desk. Similar names can belong to unrelated networks. Join the official network and wait for the phone's captive-network sign-in prompt. Apple's support explains that these networks may require a login, payment or acceptance of terms. If you dismiss the prompt, reopen the Wi-Fi settings or try a normal webpage in a browser to trigger the portal. Avoid entering passwords or payment details on a page whose network identity you cannot verify.
Separate portal trouble from eSIM trouble
If the browser does not load any external page, the Wi-Fi connection may still be blocked by the portal or having an outage. Forgetting and rejoining the official network can restart the sign-in flow, but note any session limit shown by the airport. If a VPN or privacy filter prevents the portal from appearing, pause it only as needed to complete a trusted login, then restore it. Do not repeatedly rescan an eSIM QR while the installation connection is still offline.
Once a normal webpage works, open the provider's installation instructions. Keep the phone on the public network long enough to finish the profile download, then test the eSIM itself outside Wi-Fi. Use HTTPS and official apps for sensitive actions; the FTC recommends caution on public Wi-Fi. If the airport network remains unusable, ask for another official connection or use a companion's trusted hotspot rather than handing an activation code to a stranger.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi icon, no websites | Portal not completed | Open official sign-in page. |
| Portal does not appear | Prompt dismissed or filtered | Rejoin and open browser. |
| Portal works, eSIM fails | Separate activation issue | Save eSIM error for provider. |
| Similar network names | Identity uncertain | Confirm with airport staff. |
Preserve your arrival path
Keep your boarding pass, booking address and support contact saved offline before travel. An airport portal can fail exactly when you need a ride or a map. If you cannot connect, use airport staff, a public information counter or an official transport route while you regain service. Report the network issue to the airport rather than treating it as proof that the travel eSIM purchase is defective.
