Travel eSIM has signal bars but no internet: what to check

Signal bars show radio registration, not a working data session. Turn off Wi-Fi and test a simple page, then check which SIM is selected for data and whether the plan still has usable allowance.

From bars to browsing

Select data line

Make the travel eSIM the phone's default mobile-data line.

Check plan status

Confirm destination, validity, remaining data and speed conditions.

Check provider settings

Follow data-roaming and APN instructions only for the travel line.

A successful Wi-Fi-off website test is the confirmation that data works.

Identify which line carries data

On iPhone, check Cellular Data; on Pixel or Galaxy, check the preferred mobile-data SIM. Dual-SIM phones can display bars for both lines while data is assigned to only one. Disable Wi-Fi and open a small webpage. If the home line is selected, switch to the travel line and test again. Review automatic data switching so the phone does not silently return to a costly home line when the travel connection is weak.

If the travel line is selected but no page loads, check whether Mobile Data is enabled for the phone and line. Follow the travel plan's instruction for data roaming, which often must be on for a partner network. Keep home-line data roaming under separate control. A single airplane-mode cycle may renew a stalled connection after a border crossing; do not keep toggling repeatedly without checking the underlying plan.

Check allowance and network conditions

Open the provider account on Wi-Fi and confirm the plan has started, has not expired and still has data or usable speed. A phone can remain registered after the allowance is depleted. If a plan is described as unlimited, read its fair-use and reduced-speed terms. Try a second simple site to rule out an app outage. If one app fails but the browser works, the mobile connection may be healthy.

If the problem occurs only in one building, move to an open location and test again. Local congestion or a weak partner network can make data appear dead even with bars. If it started at a border, verify the new country is included. The slow-internet guide helps when pages load but performance is poor; this guide is for pages that do not load at all.

Change APN only when instructed

An Access Point Name tells the phone how to establish a data session. Many eSIMs set it automatically. If the provider supplied a specific APN, compare it character by character with the travel line's settings. Save the original values before editing. Do not copy an APN from a different provider or alter the home line. See the APN guide for the exact decision path.

If all checks fail, contact the travel provider over Wi-Fi. Report the phone model, country, selected data line, network name, plan status and whether Wi-Fi-off browsing fails on several sites. Ask whether the data session is provisioned correctly. Avoid deleting the installed eSIM unless support confirms a replacement code and instructs you to do so.
