How to navigate public transport when mobile data fails abroad

A downloaded street map does not necessarily include live public-transport directions. Google Maps specifically excludes offline transit routing, while offline support in other apps varies by region. Prepare the journey as a sequence of stations and transfers, then keep room for live changes when data returns.

Make a route card

Before boarding

Save station names in the local language and the expected line.

At a transfer

Check the platform board rather than a stale screenshot.

After a change

Reconnect or ask staff before taking the next vehicle.

A screenshot captures a planned route, not a live service guarantee.

Record the exact transfer

Before leaving Wi-Fi, save the origin and destination stations, any line number or color, the direction or terminus, and each interchange. Include the accommodation address in the local script where possible. Screenshots are useful but easy to bury in a camera roll; keep a short text note too. Download relevant offline map areas so you can walk between stops if a connection disappears.

Know what still changes

Platforms, service suspensions, bus stops and last departures may change after the route is saved. Google Maps offline areas do not provide public-transport directions, and a downloaded Apple Maps area may vary in supported features by destination. Check station displays and operator announcements when available. A live travel eSIM is valuable for unexpected rerouting, but do not treat a data signal as more authoritative than the operator's current platform board.

Preserve access to tickets

Save a ticket or booking where the transport operator permits offline access. A PDF or pass in a wallet app can be easier to retrieve than an email that needs a fresh sign-in. Verify the barcode or ticket screen opens in airplane mode; some apps require online validation at the time of travel. Keep the booking reference and a payment method available separately in case the device cannot load the original app.

Make transfers usable under pressure

A useful transfer note says more than 'take the blue line.' Write the local station spelling, direction of travel, interchange station, number of stops and destination exit when known. If the line has branches, record the terminus printed on the train you need. Keep a screenshot of the official operator map, but verify that it is the current version. When an announcement changes the plan, rely on staffed signs and the operator's live information rather than following an old screenshot mechanically. If you have a travel companion, share the route card so one dead phone does not strand the whole group.
