How to set data, calls and texts on a Pixel with two SIMs
Pixel treats data, calls and texts as separate preferences. Setting only the travel data line can leave calls or messages on a different SIM, which may be exactly what you want or an expensive surprise.
Three Pixel choices
Mobile data
Only one SIM is the default data line at a time.
Calls
Choose a line or ask each time, depending on the device option.
Texts
Choose the SIM that owns the number you want to send from.
Name the lines before changing defaults
In Pixel's Network & internet settings, open SIMs and identify the home and travel profiles. Record which one has your established number and which one is data-only. Google describes separate controls for calls, texts and mobile data on dual-SIM Pixel phones. Models and carrier support differ, so use the options shown on your own device rather than assuming every Pixel can keep two eSIMs active or switch data automatically.
Set one task at a time
After the travel profile is installed, choose it as Mobile data when you arrive in a supported country. For Calls, choose the home line if you need that number and understand its roaming charges, or select Ask every time where available so you can make a deliberate choice. For Texts, choose the line attached to the number a recipient expects. A data-only eSIM cannot send ordinary SMS from a new local number merely because it supplies the internet connection.
Check Google's model-specific guidance for data during calls. On some Pixel configurations, an active call can change which line carries data; newer devices have separate automatic-switching options. These behaviors are tied to hardware, software and carrier support. Test a call and message with a trusted contact before relying on the setup for a hotel or bank. If keeping your home line active could trigger roaming fees, ask that carrier what receiving and outgoing activity costs.
| Preference | Typical travel choice | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile data | Travel eSIM | Country coverage and roaming rule. |
| Calls | Home or ask each time | Home-carrier roaming charge. |
| Texts | Number needed by contacts | Data-only lines lack ordinary SMS. |
| Data during calls | Model-specific | Automatic switching behavior. |
Recheck after any change
A new eSIM, system update or border crossing is a good time to confirm the three preferences. Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and load a small webpage to prove which SIM carries data; inspect the active line in settings rather than trusting a generic signal icon. If a call or text unexpectedly uses the home line, stop and correct the preference before continuing. Keep an offline arrival address while you test so the configuration never becomes the only way to reach your destination.
