How to set up a child's phone for international travel

A child's phone needs more than a data plan. Test who it can contact, what happens outside coverage and whether parental controls or account settings affect travel apps.

Child phone setup

Contact path

Save parent, accommodation and local emergency contacts.

Connection

Confirm compatible phone, plan coverage and messaging app sign-in.

Meeting rule

Agree on a place to wait if devices or networks fail.

Location sharing supports a plan; it does not replace an agreed meeting point.

Set up the phone before departure

Check whether the child's exact device supports eSIM and is unlocked before buying a plan. Install the plan over reliable Wi-Fi under its validity rules, label it and test the data-line control. Save parent phone numbers with international dialing format and put the accommodation address somewhere the child can open offline. Choose a simple messaging app already signed in on both phones. A data-only eSIM does not add ordinary calls or SMS, so decide whether the child also needs a voice-capable line.

Test the safety features together

If you use Google Family Link, its location feature requires account setup, device location permission and a working connection for current updates. The app's settings and age rules can affect who may see the child's location. Test with both devices before travel rather than assuming it starts automatically. Review the comparable tools for the child's own device and account. Make sure the child can show an offline address and can identify a uniformed airport or station staff member to ask for help if separated.

Agree on a specific meeting point and a rule for waiting there, such as the information desk inside a terminal. Tell the child how to reach local emergency services where appropriate. A live map can be stale when the battery dies or signal disappears, so parents should not interpret a stopped location dot alone. Save the contact plan on paper as well as on the phone. Keep charging cables or a suitable power bank in the correct bag.

Control cost and privacy

Check whether background app downloads, video and hotspot sharing could use the child's data allowance. Set a usage reminder rather than hiding the problem until service stops. Share the child's location only with trusted family members and review permissions after the trip. Do not post their travel documents or boarding passes publicly. A useful child setup lets them reach a known adult and show their destination even when mobile data is unavailable.
