How to compare travel eSIM cost per day and per GB
Price per gigabyte and price per day answer different questions. A low unit price is meaningless when a plan ends before the trip or includes far more data than you can use.
Make offers comparable
Same route
Exclude any offer that misses a necessary country or stop.
Same trip length
Include a renewal or second plan when validity is too short.
Useful data
Compare the amount you realistically expect to use, not only headline GB.
Start with eligibility
Write down your itinerary dates, countries and a rough data estimate from your phone's recent usage. Remove offers that cannot cover all essential stops or expire before the final day. If two shorter plans are needed, add both prices. Include any home-carrier day pass used during a gap. Only after those checks should you calculate price per day as total cost divided by usable trip days, and price per gigabyte as total cost divided by included GB.
Avoid a misleading denominator
A 20 GB plan can look cheap per GB even if you normally use 3 GB on a one-week trip. The unused 17 GB has no practical value if it expires. Likewise, a three-day bargain may cost more than a seven-day plan once a renewal is required. For an 'unlimited' offer, read the high-speed allowance and fair-use policy rather than assigning infinite GB to the calculation. Compare the first threshold that affects the apps you will actually use.
Check whether validity starts at installation or first supported network connection. An early activation can turn a nominal seven-day plan into fewer usable travel days. If plans price by calendar day or 24-hour block, note the provider's exact rule; the two are not equivalent for a late-night arrival. A small buffer for delays or unexpected navigation may be worth more than squeezing the unit price to a minimum.
| Field | Calculation | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Full-trip cost | Sum all required purchases | Extra day passes or renewals. |
| Cost per usable day | Total divided by covered trip days | Validity trigger and gaps. |
| Cost per useful GB | Total divided by data you expect to use | Expiring unused allowance. |
| Service fit | Check calls, hotspot and partner | Cheap data may omit a critical feature. |
Write a one-line result
For each eligible offer, record total cost, usable days, usable high-speed data, countries and restrictions such as hotspot policy. Then choose the lowest-cost option that still meets your needs, or pay consciously for a better network or simpler setup. Do not claim one seller is cheaper from a screenshot taken months ago; prices and promotions move. Recheck the actual checkout terms before purchase, especially tax and currency conversion.
