Travel eSIM data works but calls fail: why?

A browser loading over a travel eSIM proves mobile data works; it does not prove the plan includes ordinary cellular voice. Many travel packages are data-only. Look at the product inclusions and the phone's call default before troubleshooting the network as if it were a data outage.

Find the call path

Plan is data-only

Use an app call or a separate voice-capable line.

Voice included

Check dialer line and destination number format.

Emergency

Use the destination's official emergency route.

Internet calling and cellular voice are separate services.

Read the purchased plan

Check the order for a supplied phone number and separate allowances for outgoing calls, incoming calls and SMS. A plan marketed as 'unlimited data' does not imply voice service. If it is data-only, an ordinary dialer call will usually use another active line or fail. WhatsApp or another internet app can call contacts who use that service over data, but hotels and local services may need an ordinary number.

Check the dialer line

On dual-SIM phones, the default voice line can differ from the data line. Inspect the call screen before dialing; a saved contact may remember its last-used SIM. If your home SIM is selected, ask the carrier about roaming rates before making repeated tests. If the travel package does include voice, check its supported countries, number format and whether the network has registered the line. Try a low-stakes local or trusted-contact call before relying on it for an urgent task.

Keep a safe fallback

A data-only eSIM is not a verified emergency calling method. Save local emergency numbers and identify a voice-capable path such as a home line, local SIM or staffed phone. If voice should be included but fails, give support the plan name, country, network, dialed number format and exact phone message. Do not reset the eSIM profile merely because the data works while the dialer does not.

A test that prevents a false diagnosis

Open the provider's plan details and find an explicit voice allowance or phone number. If neither exists, try an app-to-app call to a trusted person over the working data line; if that works, mobile internet is healthy and ordinary voice simply needs another route. If voice is included, check which line the dialer selected and try the full international number format. A failure only for one number may be its destination, hours or blocking rule. A failure for every number is more useful evidence for the provider. Keep emergency communication plans separate from these routine test calls.
