What to do with a travel eSIM when your phone needs repair

A repair shop may ask for a reset, replacement device or temporary access to the phone. Your eSIM, banking apps and travel documents are tied to that device. Ask what the repair requires before erasing anything, and arrange another connection so you can still reach bookings and people.

Repair preflight

Ask

Confirm whether repair needs a reset or replacement.

Back up

Save files, account recovery and eSIM order details.

Reconnect

Plan Wi-Fi, a spare phone or a reissued profile.

Do not hand over account passwords or a reusable recovery code to a repair counter.

Clarify the repair path

A screen or battery replacement may not require the same treatment as a full device exchange. Ask the authorized service provider whether the existing phone and eSIM profile will return. Google documents a Repair mode for eligible Pixel devices that can protect personal data without a factory reset. Apple and other manufacturers have different procedures. If a full erase is required, read the option to retain or remove eSIM and confirm the provider's reissue rules first.

Protect trip access

Back up photos and documents, save reservation details on another device or paper, and confirm a backup way to sign in. Remove sensitive cards or files only through supported device procedures; do not give a technician your main account password. If a replacement device is provided, check carrier unlock and eSIM support before paying to transfer service. A physical home SIM can sometimes move easily, while a travel eSIM may need provider intervention.

Test after collection

Before leaving the shop, confirm the phone powers on, the travel profile is listed, mobile data is selected and a website loads with Wi-Fi off. Check calls and SMS separately if the home line matters. If the eSIM is gone, contact the provider from trusted Wi-Fi with order details; avoid repeatedly scanning a single-use QR. Keep the repair receipt and the old device until all needed accounts and travel files work again.

Ask the repair desk four questions

Before handing over the phone, ask whether the same hardware will be returned, whether it must be factory reset, whether the eSIM profile can remain and how long the repair will take. If a replacement device is likely, ask the eSIM provider about transfer or reissue first. Record the answer and keep the order number outside the phone. A repair that preserves the eSIM can still sign you out of banking or airline apps, so test those afterward. If the shop asks for your main account password, seek the manufacturer's supported privacy or repair procedure instead of disclosing a reusable secret.
