Hegra — Hegra · Dadan · AlUla Old Town · AlUla International Airport

As of 30 September 2026, AlUla has fixed the dates that matter for a late-year heritage trip: the Ancient Kingdoms Festival runs from 26 November-12 December 2026. The official programme promises guided visits, live cultural performances, storytelling and after-dark experiences across Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and Old Town. It also warns that capacity is limited for many activities and recommends booking early. The practical move now is to reserve the core archaeological tours, then add festival-only events as their individual ticket inventory appears.

Do not treat Hegra like an open park where you can arrive, park beside a tomb and wander. The heritage site's current rule is organised tour only; no self-driving. Its standard shared day tour starts at SAR 95, while the combined Dadan and Jabal Ikmah tour starts at SAR 60. At the Saudi Central Bank's official rate of SAR 3.75 per US dollar, those are about US$25.33 and US$16 respectively. They are useful anchors for a budget; festival-specific evening events may carry separate prices once bookable.

What the 2026 festival dates actually cover

The official Ancient Kingdoms Festival page places the event across AlUla from Thursday 26 November through Saturday 12 December 2026. Its published outline includes interactive archaeological tours, local storytelling, workshops, cultural performances, live music and guided visits through historic routes. Named settings include Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and Old Town rather than one fenced festival ground.

That spread changes how to plan the trip. A ticket for Hegra is not a universal festival pass, and an Old Town evening does not automatically include Dadan. Build the itinerary site by site and read the inclusions on each product before paying. The festival page recommends advance booking because many experiences have limited places, but it does not publish one all-in admission price. Any seller presenting a single mandatory “festival entrance fee” should therefore be checked against the official booking pages.

The safest two-day structure is to place Hegra on one day and Dadan plus Jabal Ikmah on another. That protects the two most important timed products from competing with each other and leaves an evening for Old Town. A third day creates room for a festival performance or an after-dark heritage experience without sacrificing the daylight archaeology if an event time moves.

Book Hegra first: price, route and restrictions

The official Hegra Day Tour is currently listed from SAR 95 (about US$25.33) per person. It runs for two to three hours including transfers, uses a shared English- or Arabic-speaking guide, and includes entry plus air-conditioned coach transport from Winter Park. The operator caps the shared bus at 45 people and describes the experience as low physical intensity, although it is not listed as suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

The route includes monumental Nabataean tombs and sacred spaces such as the Tomb of Lihyan, Son of Kuza and the Diwan halls. Hegra contains more than 100 monumental tombs, but visitors must remain on the designated paths: entering the tomb chambers and touching the carvings are prohibited. The site is not a place to improvise a private walking route after the guide moves on.

The premium alternative begins at SAR 1,000 per vehicle, about US$266.67 at the same fixed exchange rate. That price is for the vehicle, not a per-person shared-ticket comparison. Choose it for privacy or format, not because the standard tour omits admission: the shared product already includes the World Heritage site, guide and internal transport.

Hegra's public pages show two possible access patterns: the standard product lists Winter Park Bus Stop as its meeting point, while the site guide also mentions Hegra South Gate parking. Follow the meeting point printed on your own ticket rather than driving to whichever pin looks closest on a map.

Dadan and Jabal Ikmah deserve their own booking

The combined Dadan and Jabal Ikmah tour begins at SAR 60 (about US$16) for the shared Rawi-guided option. An audio-guided version begins at SAR 90, about US$24, with Italian, French and Mandarin added to Arabic and English. Both formats run for roughly two to three hours including transfers and depart from Winter Park.

This is not merely a second set of rock-cut tombs. Dadan was a capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, while Jabal Ikmah preserves a dense record of ancient inscriptions and rock art. The ticket also includes the “Illuminating Discoveries” exhibition at Dadan, where the official page says more than 100 excavated artefacts are shown through five themed zones. Access to that exhibition is exclusive to the Dadan and Jabal Ikmah tour products.

Transport between Winter Park, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, admission, water and the relevant guide are included; meals and transport from your accommodation to Winter Park are not. The operator says morning and afternoon tours are available daily, subject to the date shown in the booking system. Its accessibility note says the experience is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, so confirm current arrangements directly before buying if anyone in the group has mobility requirements.

Use Old Town as the flexible evening

AlUla Old Town provides a useful counterweight to the fixed coach tours. The historic market street is free to enter, while the year-round Rawi-led Old Town Tour starts at SAR 70, about US$18.67, and lasts around 90 minutes. The official Old Town page says the area becomes livelier after 15:00, with shops generally staying open until 23:00 and most restaurants until 01:00.

That makes Old Town the sensible slot to move when a festival event is released at a clashing time. It is pedestrian-only, with free parking at Old Town South Parking or the larger North Parking in AlJadidah and shuttle links from the parking zones. Women do not need to wear an abaya or headscarf in AlUla, according to the destination's practical guidance, though modest dress is required at places of worship and individual venues may set their own standards.

Photography of the architecture is part of the appeal, but the visitor guidance asks travellers to seek consent before photographing people, particularly local women and families. Tourists are also not permitted to fly drones in Saudi Arabia. Leave aerial-image plans out of the packing list rather than assuming an empty desert setting means unrestricted airspace.

Know the change and cancellation deadlines

For the Hegra day tour, cancellations qualify for a refund up to three days before the booked date, apart from non-refundable bank-card charges. The operator permits date or time changes up to one day before, subject to availability, and allows neither refunds nor changes on the day. In short, the standard tour is refundable up to 3 days before, but it is not a casual same-day decision.

The Jabal Ikmah visitor guidance states the same three-day refund threshold. It adds that cancellations within one to three days may be rebooked when another slot is available, without a refund, while same-day cancellations cannot be refunded or rebooked. If a third-party seller handles the reservation, its process may differ, so retain the confirmation and use the channel that issued the ticket.

Book the archaeology before filling the calendar with dinners and scenic stops. Hegra and Jabal Ikmah both limit daily tour capacity, and the festival itself warns that experiences may sell out. Old Town's free public areas are easier to reposition than a timed coach departure.

Getting to AlUla without assuming a departure city

AlUla International Airport is the closest air gateway, but the destination's current transport page only publishes a “summer schedule” through 24 October 2026. Because the festival starts more than a month later, do not copy that list of operating days into a November itinerary. Search the live flight schedule for your actual dates before reserving a non-refundable hotel or tour.

The same official page identifies Tabuk and Madinah as alternative airports, each within about a four-hour drive of AlUla. They may create a workable connection when a direct AlUla flight does not match the festival dates, but compare the total journey rather than the airfare alone. A late arrival plus a four-hour drive is a poor lead-in to a fixed morning tour.

Within AlUla, a rental car is useful for reaching parking and meeting areas, yet it does not replace the required internal tour transport at Hegra, Dadan or Jabal Ikmah. Keep the ticket's meeting location in the navigation app, allow time to park and check in, and store the booking offline. Desert sites can be spread farther apart than the compact town label suggests.

Check Saudi entry rules for your passport

A festival or tour booking does not grant permission to enter Saudi Arabia. The official Saudi eVisa portal currently lists 68 eligible countries. For eligible passport holders, the tourist eVisa is valid for one year, permits multiple entries and allows up to 90 days per visit. Travellers outside that list should use the official help route for the visa available to their nationality and circumstances rather than assuming a companion's eligibility applies to them.

The portal's terms require at least six months of passport validity at entry. An eVisa holder must arrive with the same passport used in the application, carry a copy of the eVisa on first arrival and expect biometric details to be captured at the border. Approval does not guarantee admission; the immigration officer retains the final decision. Check the portal again shortly before travel because eligibility and fees can change.

Connectivity is most useful between the sites

Mobile data helps with live ticket messages, driving directions, meeting-point changes and retrieving a booking confirmation. It does not override the requirement to join authorised transport inside the protected sites, and service quality can vary with the plan, handset, network availability and terrain. Download tickets and the day's route before leaving accommodation.

Roameo currently has a verified destination page for Saudi Arabia. Compare Saudi Arabia eSIM plans before departure and confirm the phone on the device compatibility checker. Roameo resells access on local carrier networks; choose data allowance and duration for the whole stay, then follow the selected plan's activation instructions rather than assuming every plan starts on installation.

A practical three-day sequence

  1. Day one: arrive with enough margin to collect transport, check in and use Old Town as the flexible evening.
  2. Day two: take the Hegra day tour, preserving the rest of the day for a festival event whose time is confirmed on the official calendar.
  3. Day three: book Dadan and Jabal Ikmah together, then return to Old Town or another confirmed evening programme.

This order puts the hardest-to-substitute bookings first. It also avoids pretending the festival is a single venue: AlUla's ancient kingdoms make sense as a chain of places, and each place has its own access rules.
