Stockholm Arlanda Airport — Stockholm Arlanda Airport · Stockholm Central Station
At Stockholm Arlanda, an ordinary SL ticket does not put you on Arlanda Express, and a commuter train journey through the airport station includes a passage charge. That is why two travelers who both say they are taking the train to central Stockholm can face very different totals. For an autumn city trip, compare the express train's speed and group fare with the commuter rail price including its airport supplement. The Arlanda Express fare page and SL airport fare page are the controlling starting points.
The services are separate products
Arlanda Express runs from Stockholm Central Station to its airport stations. Its operator says the journey to Arlanda South takes 18 minutes and trains normally depart every 15 minutes. SL's commuter rail is part of the wider public transport network and may make more sense if your actual destination connects better to its route. Yet the two ticket systems are separate: SL explicitly states its tickets are not valid on Arlanda Express. The name of the station where you board is not enough to establish ticket validity. Check the train operator displayed for the service you have selected.
A visitor sometimes sees that they already hold an SL period ticket and assumes that taking the commuter train through Arlanda will be free. SL says there is a passage fee between the airport terminal and the train platforms. It lists SEK 157 (about US$15.87 at the ECB reference rate for 19 October 2026; card rates differ) for a passenger over 18 who already has a valid SL ticket, and SEK 200 (about US$20.22) for an adult single journey including the passage supplement. The supplement is a station passage charge, not an upgrade that turns an SL ticket into an express train ticket. SL says under-18s do not pay that passage fee, but their underlying travel entitlement still needs to be checked.
Compare the current adult totals
Arlanda Express lists SEK 340 (about US$34.37) for a one-way adult ticket for ages 26 to 64. SL lists SEK 200 for an adult single journey on the commuter rail including the airport passage charge. For a solo adult without an existing SL ticket, the published difference is SEK 140 for this comparison. The express buys a faster central-station journey; the commuter option costs less and may suit a destination on the SL network. Do not translate the difference into a universal time saving for your hotel, because a transfer after Stockholm Central can erase part of the express advantage.
If you already have an SL ticket, the comparison changes. SL's listed SEK 157 supplement is the extra airport cost for a qualifying ticket holder over 18, while Arlanda Express remains a separate fare. A traveler with a prepaid transit pass should calculate only the incremental cost of each option, but should still account for any transfer, walking distance or time constraint. A traveler buying a fresh SL ticket should compare the full SEK 200 figure rather than pretending the passage charge is the only expense.
Worked example: one adult arriving with a hotel within walking distance of Stockholm Central may pay SEK 340 for a quick express ride or SEK 200 for the commuter rail route, using the current displayed fares. The commuter saving is SEK 140, but the decision also depends on the next convenient departure. Two adults traveling together face a different calculation: Arlanda Express lists SEK 460 for two adults traveling together on the same train. That is SEK 230 per person, while two SEK 200 SL airport singles total SEK 400. For that pair, the published price gap is SEK 60, which may make the express speed more attractive. Recheck the live booking screen because promotional and eligibility terms can change.
Groups, young travelers and return tickets
The express operator's group fare adds passengers travelling together on the same train; the fare page lists SEK 460 for two adults and SEK 580 for three. That is a useful reason to price the whole party before buying individually. The express page also lists a youth fare for ages 18 to 25, subject to ID, and a pensioner fare from age 65. SL uses its own age and eligibility bands: the airport fare page says its adult fare covers ages 20 to 64, with a discounted fare for certain other groups. A traveler at a boundary age should look at both operators' rules rather than assume the categories match.
Arlanda Express also lists return-ticket prices, but a return is valuable only if your return journey will use that operator. Its ordinary single and return tickets are described as valid for 90 days unless a specific offer says otherwise. A return ticket does not cover a different airport or a future commuter train. If your departure flight uses Arlanda and your accommodation stays near Central Station, compare the return with two singles. If your plans may change or the return begins from another part of Stockholm, retain flexibility and check the operator's terms before locking in both legs.
Choose the correct airport stop
Arlanda Express has two airport stops. Its journey guide identifies Arlanda South for Terminals 2, 3 and 4 and Arlanda North for Terminal 5. It says the ride from Central Station takes 18 minutes to South and 19 minutes to North. Check your airline's current terminal rather than using an old itinerary or a remembered terminal assignment. The airport operator's transport page says travel on Arlanda Express between the airport terminal stops is free, but this short transfer is not a substitute for a paid city-to-airport ticket.
From Stockholm Central, the express operator directs passengers to platforms 1 and 2. For commuter rail, search the SL journey planner for the route and ticket in force on your travel day. At the airport, follow the signs for the operator you purchased, then confirm the station and train before passing a gate. This avoids a common planning error: buying the cheaper SL fare but heading to an Arlanda Express platform, or buying express because it appears first in a journey search without checking whether the regular route would deliver you nearer your hotel.
When rail is not the only comparison
Swedavia lists bus, train and other airport transport modes on its airport transport page. A bus can be worth checking when a rail connection adds a difficult change, although this article does not assume any bus fare or travel time. The strongest rail comparison still uses the same method: identify your destination, price the whole party, include airport passage fees, then compare the total door-to-door journey. For an early departure, verify the first relevant train and allow time for airport check-in and security. Published train running times do not include either process.
Mobile data helps with the live departure board and the walk from the city station. Before departure, save your hotel address and tickets offline. If you plan to use an eSIM, check device compatibility and compare Roameo destinations; local data performance depends on the plan, device and network. A working data connection can help you revisit the SL or express timetable after a flight delay, but it does not replace a valid transport ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Arlanda Express included in an SL travel pass?
No. SL states that its tickets are not valid on Arlanda Express. Use the express operator's own ticket if you choose that train.
Why does the commuter train cost more than an ordinary SL ride?
SL charges a passage supplement at the airport station. Its listed adult single including that fee is SEK 200, or SEK 157 in passage fee for a qualifying traveler who already holds an SL ticket.
Which Arlanda Express stop is for Terminal 5?
The operator directs Terminal 5 passengers to Arlanda North. Check the current airline terminal before travel, because the useful stop depends on where your flight actually departs.
