Van Gogh Museum — Van Gogh Museum · Amsterdam Centraal

An Amsterdam museum plan can fail at the ticket desk even when you have paid for a city sightseeing card. The Van Gogh Museum is not included in the I amsterdam City Card, and it requires a ticket with a start time. For an autumn visit, secure the museum slot separately before treating the card as the foundation of your day. Both the museum's ticket rules and the City Card operator's FAQ state the exclusion. This is a different question from whether a card is good value for your other Amsterdam attractions.

The short answer: buy a separate timed ticket

The museum says it has not been affiliated with the I amsterdam City Card since June 2022. The City Card FAQ likewise says the Van Gogh Museum is outside both its Explorer and Total Experience options. Showing a city card at the entrance therefore will not replace a museum ticket. Buy through the museum's linked ticket platform or one of the authorized resellers it names, select the actual visit date and start time, and retain the ticket on your phone or as a printout. A card holder should do this even if the other parts of the day's itinerary are covered by the card.

The museum currently lists adult admission at €25 (about US$28.06 at the ECB reference rate for 19 October 2026; payment rates differ) and free admission for visitors under 18. It says all entrance tickets include the permanent collection and the current temporary exhibitions, with no separate exhibition fee. The point is useful for budgeting: a separate museum ticket is a full admission ticket, not a top-up payable after the City Card. The museum's Dutch ticket page flags a higher adult rate from January 2027, so a future visitor should verify the price for their actual date rather than assuming an October 2026 figure will still apply.

A free ticket still needs a start time

Free admission is not the same as walk-in access. The museum says all visitors need a ticket with a start time. Its booking page shows a zero-price ticket category for under-18 visitors and for eligible Museumkaart holders. If you are visiting with a child, reserve their ticket alongside the adult tickets so the group enters under a workable schedule. If you hold an eligible discount card, choose the corresponding category and carry the card as well as the e-ticket; the museum says it scans the valid pass at entry.

This distinction matters most during a short stay. Imagine two adults and a child who plan to use a City Card for several Amsterdam museums. They might buy the card and assume the Van Gogh stop can be fitted between other reservations. Under the current rules, the two adults need separate museum admission, and all three visitors need timed museum tickets even though the child admission is free. Book the Van Gogh slot first if that museum is the non-negotiable experience, then arrange card-covered visits around it. That reverses the most costly scheduling mistake: paying for a day of card validity while the desired museum slot is unavailable.

Do not confuse three different passes

I amsterdam City Card, Museumkaart and the museum's own friends or patron arrangements are different products. The museum lists Museumkaart as a free admission category, but a Museumkaart holder still normally reserves a start time online. It also names special direct-access arrangements for certain friends and patrons; those exceptions should not be applied to a general visitor with a different pass. The City Card has its own selection of included attractions, which does not extend to the Van Gogh Museum. Read the name of the pass on the museum booking page before selecting a zero-price category.

The City Card operator distinguishes Explorer from Total Experience. According to its FAQ, Explorer offers a chosen number of participating locations over a validity period but does not include GVB public transport; Total Experience includes the specified transport benefit. This can matter if your museum day includes trips across the city, but neither version makes Van Gogh admission free. A useful card value calculation therefore starts with attractions you will actually visit, checks each inclusion and reservation rule, then adds any separately priced attraction such as Van Gogh. Avoid counting the museum's €25 adult admission as a card saving.

How to book without buying the wrong product

Open the museum's official tickets page and follow its purchase link. Choose the number of adults, under-18 visitors and eligible pass holders. Select the date and start time that fit your other commitments. The museum warns that tickets are available online only and that there are no on-site exhibition surcharges. Its booking page says each visitor needs a valid ticket, the ticket is valid only at the selected date and time, and purchased tickets are non-refundable. Those are material conditions if your flight or rail arrival is uncertain; do not buy a tight slot immediately after travel without leaving room for a delay.

The museum names its official ticket platform and several authorized resellers on its tickets page and warns about fraudulent tickets elsewhere. Use the named channels rather than a page that only looks official in an advertisement. A reseller may bundle something else, but the admission rule remains: make sure the product includes a museum ticket for the intended date and start time. If you are comparing offers, read the total checkout price and cancellation terms of that exact product. The museum's own non-refundable ticket condition should not be silently assumed to be identical to a third-party bundle's terms.

A worked one-day itinerary decision

Suppose you have one day in Amsterdam and want the Van Gogh Museum plus other participating museums. First, look for a Van Gogh time you can attend. If the only available slot is late afternoon, schedule any included museum that fits earlier, allowing for travel between them. Then compare the price of the City Card with the individual admissions and transport you genuinely expect to use. The card can still be useful for other visits, but it cannot solve a sold-out Van Gogh start time. If no suitable slot exists, decide whether the other included attractions make the card worthwhile on their own.

A family should calculate per person. The museum's under-18 admission is free, while the City Card FAQ says its child card versions have their own conditions and must be bought with an adult card. Do not assign an adult museum saving to a child who already qualifies for free museum entry. Conversely, do not assume a free museum category removes the requirement to reserve. These small distinctions can change both the budget and the day plan more than a headline card price suggests.

What to keep ready at the entrance

Save the correct timed e-ticket and any qualifying pass where you can retrieve them without relying entirely on live connectivity. Check the museum's visitor information close to your visit for entrance procedures and current opening hours. If you are using an eSIM during your trip, confirm phone compatibility and compare Roameo travel data plans before departure. Mobile data can make map directions and booking messages easier to access, but it does not act as proof of museum admission. The ticket and eligible pass are the documents that matter at the entrance.
