Changdeokgung Palace — Changdeokgung Palace
Autumn is a busy season for Changdeokgung in Seoul, and its Secret Garden creates a booking decision that the palace's ordinary entrance does not. The palace buildings and the garden are separate admission products. If you only want the main palace, you can plan a flexible visit. If the wooded garden is the reason you are going, a timed, limited place becomes the centre of the day. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's current reservation page is the place to start.
What does the ordinary palace ticket cover?
The ordinary Changdeokgung ticket covers the palace building area, called jeonggak on the official site. The Center's admission page lists KRW 3,000 for a standard adult admission to this area. A visitor interested in palace architecture, courtyards and a less rigid day can buy that ticket without winning a garden reservation. The reservation page says same day purchases are available for the main palace, without a numerical capacity limit of the kind imposed on the garden. That distinction is useful if you are building an itinerary around several Seoul stops.
The main palace is not an empty waiting room before a garden slot. It is a destination whose structures and courtyards can be experienced on their own terms. Decide whether you would still enjoy the visit if no garden place is available. If the answer is yes, keep the ordinary palace on the itinerary. If the answer is no, secure the garden slot before fixing the rest of the day. That simple question prevents a common planning error: treating a basic palace ticket as a hidden garden reservation.
What extra ticket does the garden require?
The official price table lists KRW 5,000 for a standard adult Secret Garden visit, and explicitly says a palace admission ticket is also required. At the Xe mid-market reference rate checked on 24 October 2026, KRW 3,000 is approximately US$2.27 and KRW 5,000 approximately US$3.78; card rates and fees vary. For an adult paying both standard prices, the listed admission total is KRW 8,000, or approximately US$6.05 at that reference rate. That is a transparent sum of two separate tickets, not a quoted combined product. Some visitors qualify for reductions or free palace admission; the exact total for them depends on the category and evidence required. Check the official eligibility rules rather than assuming the standard adult sum applies to every member of your party.
The garden is a protected area with limited admission. The Center's frequently asked questions explain that the garden has fixed entry sessions and that visitors gather at the garden entrance. It says visitors may join the interpretation route or walk independently only within open areas. This is a materially different experience from roaming the building area whenever you arrive. A late arrival can lose the point of the reservation. Leave enough time to enter the main palace, orient yourself and reach the garden meeting place.
The same official FAQ says a garden session has a maximum of 100 people per session: 50 online reservation places and 50 same day ticket places. Those numbers describe the official allocation; they do not promise that a walk up visitor will find a seat. Demand is especially relevant in autumn. The official admission page warns that garden places for October and November can sell out quickly online and on site. For a short Seoul trip, online booking is the safer planning route when a garden visit is essential.
When should you reserve?
The current official reservation page says Secret Garden online booking opens at 10:00 Korean time six days before the visit, excluding the visit day from that count, and runs until the previous day subject to availability. A separate note says same day on site tickets begin at 09:00. This is a booking window, not a guarantee that seats remain until the final day. Set a reminder using Korean time and check the exact date displayed in the official booking system. If your home clock differs, convert the time carefully before relying on an alarm.
Book the palace component as well. The garden reservation page states that palace admission is required, with a separate exception process for those entitled to free or discounted palace entry or holding the integrated palace ticket. A traveller who secures the garden but forgets the main gate requirement has created an avoidable problem. Keep both confirmations together on the phone and save a copy that can be opened offline. Bring any proof needed for a concession. The reservation page says eligible visitors who booked a garden place can present proof by 15 minutes before entry for the applicable refund or adjustment.
If the online allocation is full, an on site attempt may still be possible, but should be treated as a contingency rather than the backbone of a one day plan. Travel time, queueing and available sessions can defeat a spontaneous visit. The practical alternative is to enjoy the main palace without the garden, then choose another activity that does not depend on a scarce slot. Do not buy a general palace ticket under the assumption that staff can turn it into a garden admission after the allocation has filled.
Match the session to your language and season
The Center's hours and special visit timetable lists garden sessions by language and season. For March through November it lists English sessions at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30; December through February has a shorter English list. Korean sessions are more frequent, while Japanese and Chinese sessions are offered on specified days. These are published schedules, but operations and closures can change. Use the live reservation system for your exact date rather than planning around a copied timetable alone.
The official information also sets language based admission conditions. It states that domestic visitors cannot enter foreign language garden sessions unless accompanying a foreign visitor, with a limit of two domestic companions. This detail matters for mixed nationality groups and for anyone assuming that an open seat in another language is freely interchangeable. Read the reservation conditions for the session you select, then book the whole party consistently.
Changdeokgung's main palace hours also vary with season. The official timetable lists 09:00 to 18:00 in September and October, with last entry at 17:00, and a shorter day beginning in November. Tuesday is its normal weekly closing day, subject to holiday adjustments shown on the official site. A garden slot cannot be considered in isolation from the palace opening and your arrival route. If a bus or subway delay would leave no margin, choose a later session if available.
Would a combined palace ticket solve it?
The Center lists a KRW 6,000 integrated ticket covering four palaces and Jongmyo within its stated validity, but the admission page explicitly excludes Changdeokgung's Secret Garden. It is therefore useful for a broader palace itinerary, not a way around the garden's separate reservation and capacity. The question to ask at checkout is whether the product names the garden itself. If it does not, assume you must obtain a separate garden place through the official route.
Likewise, eligibility for free ordinary palace entry should not be treated as an automatic garden reservation. The Center lists a separate, narrower free garden category in its fee notes and still directs visitors to reserve a slot. A reduced cash price and a place in a limited session are two different issues. Read both the fee table and the reservation conditions before concluding that a concession covers your complete visit.
A worked Seoul day
Imagine two adults in Seoul who care most about the garden foliage. They first check that Changdeokgung is open on their chosen date, then use the official booking window to secure a suitable garden session. Their standard admission budget is KRW 3,000 each for the main palace plus KRW 5,000 each for the garden. They arrive with time to enter the palace and find the garden entrance, keeping their booking proof ready. After the timed part, they can see additional palace areas at a calmer pace if opening hours allow. The key is that the garden slot anchors the day.
Consider a second party with several Seoul commitments and no strong need to enter the garden. They buy or plan for ordinary palace admission, review the opening hours and walk the main grounds. They avoid shaping the whole day around a limited garden place they may not use. If the garden happens to have same day availability, they can decide whether the extra cost and time suit them, but the successful version of their day does not depend on it.
For maps, booking confirmation and a live journey check, a compatible phone with travel data can be convenient. Roameo's destination catalogue lets travellers compare available data plans; check coverage, device compatibility and plan terms before purchase. Roameo does not sell palace admission or control garden inventory. Keep the official booking page and a saved confirmation as your sources for the actual visit.
Make the choice before you go
Choose the main palace alone if architecture and a flexible route satisfy your reason for visiting. Choose both tickets if the Secret Garden is a priority, then reserve the session first and build the day's travel around it. Check the seasonal hours, language conditions and current sales window again near the visit. Those steps make a late October palace visit more reliable than assuming that one gate ticket opens every part of the site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the standard Changdeokgung ticket include the Secret Garden?
No. The official table prices the palace and garden separately and requires palace admission for a garden visit.
Can I try for a garden ticket on the day?
The Center says an on site allocation is sold from 09:00, subject to availability. In autumn, do not rely on finding a place after arrival.
Does the integrated palace pass include the garden?
No. The official integrated ticket excludes Changdeokgung's Secret Garden, which has its own capacity and booking process.
