Arriving at Incheon Airport for an autumn Seoul trip presents a deceptively simple rail choice: the orange Express train or the all-stop airport railroad. Both reach Seoul Station, but only the all-stop service calls at Hongik University, Gongdeok and other intermediate stations. The useful question is therefore where your first usable stop is, not which train has the faster airport-to-terminal headline. The AREX operator describes the Express route as nonstop between Seoul Station and the airport terminals, while Seoul's official arrival guide sets out the all-stop service and its interchange stations.

Start with the address, not the train color

Put your hotel's actual address into a map and identify its nearest railway station. A hotel advertised as “Seoul central” might be near Seoul Station, but it could equally be closer to Hongik University, Gongdeok, Digital Media City or a subway interchange. If your destination is directly served by an all-stop station, taking Express to Seoul Station can mean riding past your useful stop and then navigating another train or taxi leg. A faster line-haul does not erase the time spent changing levels and platforms with luggage. Conversely, a hotel within an easy walk of Seoul Station makes the nonstop service much more compelling.

The all-stop AREX is also useful for a Gimpo Airport connection. The operator's route list includes Gimpo International Airport, whereas the Express list contains only Seoul Station and Incheon's two terminals. Buying an Express ticket for a trip whose next stop is Gimpo would create an avoidable detour. If your onward route uses Seoul Subway Line 2, the Hongik University interchange can be the more logical first transfer. For Line 5 or Line 6, Gongdeok may make more sense. These are route decisions, not claims that one service is universally better.

What the published travel times actually compare

AREX lists the Express ride between Seoul Station and Incheon Terminal 1 as 43 minutes and the ride to Terminal 2 as 51 minutes. Seoul's official guide lists 59 minutes from Terminal 1 to Seoul Station and 66 minutes from Terminal 2 on the local train, with a note that some trains require a further two to six minutes. Those numbers compare station-to-station train rides. They do not include baggage reclaim, walking to the transport center, ticket purchase, a wait for the next departure or the final leg to your accommodation. Treat an apparent 15 or 16 minute ride advantage as one component of the door-to-door journey.

The city guide says Express departures are roughly every 20 to 40 minutes, while all-stop departures are more frequent, with exact intervals depending on the station and time. Consider an illustrative arrival: you reach the rail concourse just after an Express leaves and the next departure is still some time away. An all-stop train that departs sooner may deliver you to your hotel neighborhood earlier, especially if that neighborhood has a direct local stop. This is a worked comparison, not a promised timetable. Check the live departure screens after you clear the airport and allow for your actual transfer time.

Ticket and fare: compare the whole trip

The operator currently displays an adult Express selling fare of ₩13,000 for the Seoul Station–airport service. It also notes a separate ticket is required before boarding. At the ECB reference rates dated 22 October 2026, ₩13,000 is approximately US$9.81; this is a currency illustration, not the amount your card will charge. The all-stop fare page prices travel by station pair and distinguishes transport-card and other fare arrangements. Seoul's city guide provides an indicative local fare range, but its fare figure may lag an operator change; use the operator table or station machine for the precise origin, destination and payment method on your day of travel. Do not compare the Express fare only with a local fare to Seoul Station if your all-stop journey ends earlier at Hongik University.

For two travelers, the difference between two Express tickets and two local fares may matter, but the choice is not purely arithmetic. A reserved seat and a direct run can be worth paying for after a long flight when Seoul Station is the final rail stop. A local train can save both money and a transfer when the destination is on its route. If you plan to ride more Seoul transit immediately after arriving, check how the fare medium for the all-stop train fits the rest of your journey. The Express uses its own ticket rather than acting as an ordinary subway ride.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are different starting points

Before planning a departure, confirm which Incheon terminal your airline uses on the specific flight. AREX serves both, and Terminal 2 adds travel time because it is farther along the line. The operator's Express times distinguish the terminals, as do Seoul's published all-stop times. A friend who shares a flight number from another carrier or a screenshot from a previous itinerary is not a reliable substitute for the booking and airport signs. Allow time from the arrivals hall to the rail station, then read the departure board for your terminal.

The Express ticket counters identified by Seoul's arrival guide are in the airport transport centers and at Seoul Station. At the airport, follow signs for the railroad and then distinguish the Express ticket and gate area from the all-stop platform. The cover photograph illustrates this choice; it is editorial artwork, not a depiction of the exact station layout. If you are unsure, ask station staff which gate serves your selected train. Boarding the wrong service can be more disruptive than taking a few minutes to confirm the platform.

Worked hotel scenarios

Suppose your hotel is beside Hongik University Station. The all-stop line calls there on its way to Seoul Station. On Express, you would first reach Seoul Station, then need another service or road transfer back toward your hotel. Even if the Express train itself is faster, the local train is the direct rail answer. A similar check applies to accommodation near Gongdeok. Open the address, identify the nearest station and look for a genuinely walkable exit; a place described as being “in Hongdae” can still be far from the station with a heavy suitcase.

Now suppose your hotel is a short, accessible walk from Seoul Station, or your onward rail journey starts there. The nonstop Express is a sensible choice if the next departure and ticket cost suit you. If you arrive during a tight connection window, do the complete calculation: current time, walk to the platform, next departure, train ride and time to find the onward platform. Do not rely on the 43-minute figure alone. If the connection is especially consequential, leave a larger buffer than the advertised train ride suggests.

A third traveler is transferring from Incheon to Gimpo for another flight. The all-stop AREX includes Gimpo International Airport on the operator's route; Express does not. Confirm the terminal and whether your flight change requires leaving the airside area, baggage collection or a fresh check-in. Those airline and immigration conditions are separate from the train choice and can dominate the connection. This article can tell you which train stops at Gimpo; it cannot make a short self-transfer safe.

Late arrivals and a missed train

Train frequencies and final departures can change. Seoul's public guide gives broad service intervals, but those are insufficient for a flight landing near the end of the operating day. Search the operator's current timetable for your terminal and travel date. Then build in time for immigration, luggage and walking before deciding rail is viable. If your estimated arrival at the platform falls close to the final train, identify a backup such as an authorized airport bus or taxi before you board the flight. Avoid buying a time-specific ticket on the assumption that your aircraft will land exactly on schedule.

The same logic matters on the return journey. Seoul Station is a useful origin for Express, yet an all-stop boarding point may be closer to your hotel. The best outbound answer need not be your best inbound answer, since luggage, checkout time and onward subway service may differ. Re-check the terminal printed on the airline itinerary and the current train schedule. For a departure flight, allow a margin for airport check-in and security rather than treating the scheduled rail arrival as the moment you can reach the gate.

Connectivity for the handoff from rail to street

Save the hotel address in Korean and a screenshot of the route before leaving the airport. Mobile data can help you compare the next trains, verify the station exit and message your hotel if your arrival shifts. If you plan to use a travel eSIM, check your phone's eSIM support and the plan's coverage before buying; network performance depends on local networks, the device and where you are. Roameo's compatibility checker and destination plans are places to review that option. Keep an offline copy of essential booking details in case connectivity is delayed.

The practical decision

Choose Express when Seoul Station is genuinely your first useful stop and a suitable departure is available. Choose all-stop when it directly serves your neighborhood or interchange, especially Hongik University, Gongdeok or Gimpo Airport. Compare total door-to-door time and the correct station-pair fare, not just the trains' names. Confirm terminal, platform and timetable on the day. That approach is more robust than declaring a single “fastest airport train” for every Seoul visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AREX Express stop at Hongik University?

No. The operator lists it as a nonstop airport-to-Seoul-Station service. Take the all-stop train if Hongik University is your intended rail stop.

Can I use an Express ticket on the all-stop train?

Plan on separate ticketing. AREX says the Express requires its own ticket before boarding; check the station's current rules if changing your plan.

Which train reaches Gimpo Airport?

The all-stop AREX serves Gimpo International Airport. The Express does not stop there, so verify the local departure and allow for any airline transfer formalities.
