Mount Teide summit — Mount Teide summit · Teide Cable Car base station · Roques de Garcia · Tenerife South Airport
On 1 October 2026, Mount Teide's cable-car day became 40 minutes shorter: the official timetable now runs from 09:00 to 18:00 through 13 October, with the last descent at 17:50. It shortens again twice before the month ends. That clock matters because reaching Spain's highest point is no longer a matter of buying one cable-car ticket. A non-resident taking the cable car and walking the final summit path needs a named trail reservation carrying a EUR 15 fee (about US$17.10), plus the separately booked ride.
The new fee system has been in force since 19 January 2026. Places appear only four weeks out, weather can close the upper mountain, and the summit authorisation does not travel with a cable-car booking. This guide separates the products so that an October or winter-sun trip to Tenerife does not fail at the control point.
Three bookings that are easy to confuse
There are three distinct things to buy or reserve. First, the Teide Cable Car carries passengers from its base station at 2,356 metres to the upper station. Second, PNT 10 Telesforo Bravo is the short, controlled path from the upper area to the crater rim. Third, PNT 07 Montana Blanca-La Rambleta is the long ascent on foot to the upper station area. None automatically includes either of the others.
| Part of the day | What to reserve | 2026 non-resident cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cable car up and down | Timed ticket from the official operator | From EUR 43 (about US$49.03) |
| Upper station to summit | PNT 10 Telesforo Bravo on Tenerife ON | EUR 15 (about US$17.10) |
| Full ascent on foot | PNT 07 Montana Blanca-La Rambleta on Tenerife ON | EUR 6 weekdays; EUR 10 weekends and holidays |
The Cabildo de Tenerife's fee notice is the source of the trail charges. At the European Central Bank's 25 September reference rate of US$1.1403 per euro, the weekday PNT 07 fee is about US$6.84 and the weekend or holiday fee about US$11.40. The cable-car operator's live booking page currently advertises the return ride from EUR 43 (about US$49.03); its use of “from” matters because the fare can vary by demand and date.
A cable-car ticket does not include permission to enter PNT 10. If the summit is the objective, match the time on the trail reservation with enough margin after the cable-car ascent. Do not buy the ride first and assume a summit place will appear later.
How the 28-day release works
Tenerife ON releases a new week of trail inventory every Monday at 07:00 Canary time and keeps a rolling 28-day booking horizon. The practical sequence is therefore: create and validate the Tenerife ON account before release morning, reserve the relevant trail, and only then choose a cable-car session that fits it. The required value is Mondays at 07:00 Canary time, 28 days ahead, not midnight in the traveller's home time zone.
The reservation requires the details of every participant and a credit or debit card. Confirmed bookings cannot normally be modified, cancelled, transferred to different people, dates or times, or refunded. The published exceptions cover trail closure for weather or another exceptional circumstance, and a cable-car shutdown where relevant. Being refused for missing compulsory equipment is not a refund reason.
The national park's summit regulations also require official identification for every named visitor. The applicant must be present or the permit is invalid for the applicant and companions. A single application may include up to nine companions when places are available, but each person belongs on the reservation.
Which route should you book?
Choose PNT 10 if the plan is to ride the cable car and walk only the controlled final section to the crater. Day access is divided into two-hour periods from 09:00 to 17:00. The path carries no more than 50 people at one time, while the crater-edge section is limited to 10. Visitors must stay on the marked path; walking around or entering the crater is prohibited.
Choose PNT 07 for the full hike from Montana Blanca toward La Rambleta. The ecotax applies between 09:00 and 15:00: EUR 6 weekdays; EUR 10 weekends and holidays for visitors outside the Canary Islands. A person continuing from La Rambleta to the summit still needs the separate PNT 10 reservation. On a weekend, the two trail charges can therefore total EUR 25, about US$28.51, before any cable-car ride.
Roques de Garcia is the low-risk alternative when summit inventory has gone. Its rock formations sit in the Las Canadas caldera below Teide and require neither a cable-car ticket nor a summit permit. It gives the clearest orientation to the volcano and works as a weather fallback, but it is not a substitute reservation route to the crater.
October 2026 cable-car hours
The operator publishes three different schedules within October. From 1-13 October the cable car runs 09:00-18:00; last descent 17:50. From 14-24 October it runs 09:00-17:30, with last ascent at 16:30 and last descent at 17:20. From 25 October through 31 December, it runs 09:00-17:00, with last ascent at 16:00 and last descent at 16:50.
Those are scheduled hours, not a promise that the cabins will operate. High wind, ice or technical conditions can stop the service. The official summit rules allow a daytime PNT 10 permit affected by a cable-car shutdown to be used on the first day the cable car reopens within a three-day window, but same-day permit holders have priority if the trail reaches capacity. Anyone depending on that rule should read the current permit terms rather than treating the next day as automatic access.
Equipment is checked, even if you take the cable car
The official cable-car booking page lists the minimum kit for walking up or down the trails that lead to the upper station: suitable mountain footwear, warm clothing, a thermal blanket, water, a charged mobile phone, and a headlamp or torch. Tenerife's trail notice says access can be refused for missing mandatory equipment without a refund of the trail fee.
This is not ceremonial packing. The cable car rises 1,199 metres to an upper station at 3,555 metres, where wind and temperature differ sharply from the coast. The Ministry for Ecological Transition gives the mountain's surveyed summit altitude as 3,715 metres. Travellers who feel unwell at altitude should turn back rather than allowing a paid slot to dictate the decision.
Getting to Teide without assuming a departure point
Tenerife has north and south airports. Tenerife South is the larger leisure gateway and appears on the map with the cable-car station, summit and Roques de Garcia. Aena lists bus 40 between Tenerife South Airport, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, line 10 toward Santa Cruz, night line 711, and line 343 between the north and south airports. None is a direct airport-to-summit service; reaching the park requires a separate island bus, organised transfer, taxi or car plan.
Private-car access is also changing. The island government says a reservation system is due at the main park entrances by the end of 2026, with 500 bookable parking spaces and visitor charges still being developed. It separately plans a 28-bus public network from Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, Costa Adeje and Puerto Santiago in 2027. Because final launch dates and parking prices are not yet published, do not build a late-2026 trip around an unconfirmed shuttle timetable.
Spain entry checks and data on the mountain
Entry rules depend on nationality and route. Spain's foreign ministry says third-country visitors on short stays may remain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, must hold a travel document valid for three months beyond the planned Schengen departure and issued within the previous 10 years, and need a visa if their nationality requires one. Border officers may request proof of accommodation, onward travel and sufficient funds. Travellers covered by EU free-movement rules follow a different regime, so check the official Spain entry page against the passport actually being used.
Save the trail confirmation, identification details, cable-car ticket and offline map before driving into the national park. Mobile service can vary with terrain and provider; a travel eSIM is useful for retrieving bookings and checking closures, but it cannot replace offline copies or guarantee a signal on a volcanic slope. Spain does not currently have a local country page in Roameo's measured catalog, so start with the honest destination-plan directory and confirm that the plan selected explicitly lists Spain before paying. Also run the phone through the eSIM compatibility checker before the 28-day booking morning.
FAQ
Does a Teide cable-car ticket include the summit permit?
No. The cable-car ride and PNT 10 Telesforo Bravo reservation are separate products. Reserve the named trail slot through Tenerife ON, then match it with a suitable cable-car time.
How much does the Mount Teide summit trail cost in 2026?
PNT 10 costs EUR 15 for a non-resident, about US$17.10 at the ECB's 25 September 2026 reference rate. The cable car is separate and currently starts at EUR 43 return.
When do new Teide trail reservations open?
New inventory opens Mondays at 07:00 Canary time, 28 days ahead. Register and validate the Tenerife ON account before the release because each participant's details are required.
Can I hike from Montana Blanca to the summit with one booking?
No. PNT 07 covers the long ascent to La Rambleta; continuing on the controlled PNT 10 section to the crater requires its own reservation.
What happens if the Teide cable car closes?
The summit regulations provide a limited first-reopening-day option within three days for an affected daytime permit, subject to capacity and priority for that day's permit holders. Check the live notice before travelling uphill.
Is there a free Teide visit if summit slots are gone?
Yes. Roques de Garcia provides a close caldera view of Teide without a cable-car ticket or summit permit. It does not give access to the crater or replace either controlled trail reservation.
