Sambodromo da Marques de Sapucai — Sambodromo da Marques de Sapucai · Praca Onze metro station · Central do Brasil station · Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport
As of 27 September 2026, the official Rio Carnival seller labels every standard 2027 Sambadrome product on its event page as sold out: special grandstands, numbered Sector 12 chairs and six-person front boxes. That does not mean the last face-value ticket has gone. Rio's samba-league organizer says popular grandstands in Sectors 12 and 13 still have a future sale to be announced, while rejected payments and cancelled illegal resales can return inventory to Ticketmaster. If Rio is on your February calendar, the useful move today is to watch those two official channels rather than pay an anonymous reseller.
The competitive Special Group parades run on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027, with four schools appearing each night. The top finishers return for the 13 February 2027 Champions Parade. This guide explains what the face-value tickets cost, which dates offer a free alternative, how sector numbers change your journey to the gate and which entry rule depends on your passport.
Rio Carnival 2027 dates at a glance
| Date | Event | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| 7 February | Competitive parade, night one | Uniao de Marica, Beija-Flor, Paraiso do Tuiuti and Vila Isabel |
| 8 February | Competitive parade, night two | Mocidade, Unidos da Tijuca, Salgueiro and Imperatriz |
| 9 February | Competitive parade, night three | Portela, Viradouro, Grande Rio and Mangueira |
| 13 February | Champions Parade | The best-placed schools return after judging |
The lineup is not a rumour assembled from tour listings. Rio's tourism board published the night-by-night themes in July, and LIESA's official 2027 page now shows the same order. Choosing a night therefore means choosing schools, not merely choosing whichever date fits your hotel. If one school's community, percussion section or announced story is the reason you want to go, check the order before buying any inventory that reappears.
A Champions Parade ticket is a different bet. You will not know its complete lineup until the competition has been judged, but the night gathers the strongest finishers into one return performance. It is also on Saturday rather than the Sunday-to-Tuesday run of competitive nights. The official event guidance confirms that the date is 13 February, not the weekend immediately following a guessed Carnival calendar.
What official tickets cost
LIESA's 10 September release priced special grandstands in Sectors 2 through 11, excluding Sector 9, at R$250 (about US$48) per night. Eligible half-price tickets were R$125, about US$24, for students, people with disabilities, people aged 60 or over and qualifying low-income young people under Brazilian rules. Numbered chairs in Sector 12 carried the same R$250 full price. The conversion uses the Banco Central do Brasil's 25 September closing rate of R$5.1991 to US$1, so treat the dollar amounts as a planning reference rather than the amount your card will settle.
The front-row boxes known as frisas held six people and ranged from R$1,835 to R$10,200 per box, roughly US$353 to US$1,962 at that same rate, depending on proximity to the parade lane. For that September release, each buyer could purchase no more than two grandstand or chair tickets per parade day, and only one half-price ticket per CPF identity number in total. A buyer could take one frisa per parade day. The release page also said frisas had to be paid by Pix, Brazil's instant-payment system; grandstands and chairs accepted the methods available through Ticketmaster.
The official Ticketmaster event page currently shows standard official tickets marked sold out. Do not read an old sale announcement as proof that stock remains. LIESA says tickets connected to illegal resale can be cancelled and returned to the official system, and popular Sectors 12 and 13 are still due a separately announced sale.
There is no service fee for Rio Carnival 2027 on the official platform. Ticketmaster says ordinary card purchases can use a credit card or Pix; foreign-issued credit cards are accepted, but they cannot use the Brazilian instalment option, and the account country must match the card's country of issue. Pix reservations expire after ten minutes if payment is not completed. These details matter because scarce returned inventory can disappear while a buyer is still correcting account or payment data.
How the official release system actually behaves
The September release was not a large new block. LIESA said those seats had returned after abandoned purchases, payment inconsistencies and antifraud cancellations. Its waiting room opened 30 minutes before sales began, but entry into that room did not establish queue order; positions were randomized at the advertised start time. The organizer's August ticketing answers also described why a seat can appear available and vanish before checkout: thousands of buyers may be looking at the same returned inventory, and only one completes the cart first.
That history suggests a practical plan. Follow LIESA and Rio Carnaval for the announcement, create your Ticketmaster Brazil account before the next window and decide in advance which date and sector you will accept. Keep the official event page open only when a release is genuinely announced. Constantly refreshing a third-party listing does not move you closer to face-value stock, and a screenshot or forwarded PDF is not an official sale.
Ticket delivery is digital only, released nearer the event. The official seller says buyers will receive instructions by email when tickets become available through its digital-ticket system. A legitimate September purchase therefore need not already include a downloadable ticket, but that delay is also a reason not to buy a supposed instant PDF from a stranger.
The free route: four technical-rehearsal nights
If your dates are flexible, LIESA has already confirmed free technical rehearsals on 23, 24, 30 and 31 January 2027. These are real runs in the Sambadrome, including light and sound tests, not a street bloco somewhere else in the city. Admission is free. They do not reproduce the judged Carnival night with finished costumes and floats, but they put the schools on the same parade avenue and solve the ticket-cost problem honestly.
- Saturday, 23 January: children's schools from 17:30, followed from 20:00 by Uniao de Marica, Beija-Flor and Paraiso do Tuiuti.
- Sunday, 24 January: children's schools from 17:00, followed from 19:00 by Vila Isabel, Mocidade and Unidos da Tijuca.
- Saturday, 30 January: children's schools from 17:30, followed from 20:00 by Salgueiro, Imperatriz and Portela.
- Sunday, 31 January: the ceremonial washing of Sapucai from 17:00, followed from 19:00 by Viradouro, Grande Rio and Mangueira.
The complete timetable is on LIESA's rehearsal announcement. For a traveler who has not yet booked a flight, arriving by 23 January creates four chances to see every Special Group school rehearse. It also avoids treating an expensive hospitality box as the only remaining way into the Sambadrome.
Pick transport after you know your sector
The Sambadrome straddles different approaches, so the odd/even number printed on a ticket is operational information. Metrorio directs even-numbered sectors to Praca Onze station and odd-numbered sectors to Central do Brasil. Its Praca Onze station page specifically identifies the station as close to the even-side grandstand entrance and notes step-free access through the Julio do Carmo entrance.
Do not copy the special overnight timetable from the current Carnival page into a 2027 plan: that page still displays 2026 operating dates. Use its sector-to-station routing, which is stable and specific, but check the published 2027 operating hours shortly before travel. The normal station page lists contactless Visa, Mastercard and Elo cards or NFC devices as gate-payment options, alongside Metrorio's own products.
Build the return around the same side of the venue. Crossing the parade complex after a long night can turn a simple station walk into a detour through controlled streets. Save your hotel address, your chosen station and an offline map before leaving. If you want mobile data for transport changes, messaging and digital-ticket access, compare Brazil eSIM plans before the trip and check your handset on the compatibility page. Network experience still depends on the local carrier, congestion and your device.
What you can take inside
LIESA's current visitor guidance allows up to two 500 ml plastic containers holding water, juice, soft drink or beer, plus two food items such as fruit, a savoury snack or a sandwich. Glass bottles, foam coolers, large bags, weapons, sharp objects, flares and fireworks are prohibited. Children and teenagers aged 16 or younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Those limits make a compact bag the sensible choice. Keep the phone holding the digital ticket charged, carry a backup battery, and use plastic rather than glass for any permitted drink. Recheck the event page before departure in case the 2027 gate policy changes; the organizer's live guidance outranks a packing list saved months earlier.
Check the Brazil entry rule for your passport
Brazil's visitor-visa treatment is nationality-specific, so there is no worldwide yes-or-no answer. If your passport requires a visitor visa, use the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations guidance for the consular post serving your place of residence. For Australian, Canadian and United States passport holders, the ministry says an eVisa has been required since 10 April 2025. Its official June 2026 guidance lists a US$80.90 fee and says the eVisa can be valid for ten years; it also advises applying two months before travel. Other passports may be visa-exempt or follow different validity and stay rules.
Do not let the Carnival ticket determine the sequence. Check entry eligibility first, then book transport and accommodation, then pursue official ticket inventory. A non-refundable resale purchase is especially poor leverage when the travel document needed to use it has not been approved.
FAQ
Are Rio Carnival 2027 Sambadrome tickets sold out?
The official Ticketmaster page marked special grandstands, Sector 12 chairs and frisas sold out on 27 September 2026. LIESA has nevertheless said that popular grandstands in Sectors 12 and 13 will have a future sale, and cancelled or rejected orders can return to official inventory. Watch LIESA, Rio Carnaval and Ticketmaster rather than assuming a reseller has the last legitimate seat.
How much was an official grandstand ticket?
The 10 September official release charged R$250, about US$48 at the Banco Central do Brasil's 25 September rate, for one parade night in the special grandstands. The eligible half-price rate was R$125, about US$24. Future releases could publish different products or conditions, so confirm the live listing before payment.
Which Rio Carnival 2027 rehearsal is free?
All four official technical-rehearsal nights are free: 23, 24, 30 and 31 January 2027. Different schools appear on each date. The final night includes the washing of Sapucai from 17:00, then Viradouro, Grande Rio and Mangueira from 19:00.
Which metro station serves the Sambadrome?
For even-numbered sectors, Metrorio directs spectators to Praca Onze. For odd-numbered sectors, use Central do Brasil. Confirm the 2027 special operating timetable nearer the event because the operator's current Carnival page still displays the previous year's overnight schedule.
Do I need a visa for Brazil Carnival?
It depends on your passport. Australian, Canadian and United States passport holders currently need Brazil's eVisa; many other nationalities follow visa-exempt or different consular rules. Check the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations page for your nationality before making non-refundable bookings.
