Salem changed the transport plan just as October visitors were locking in their days. As of 25 September 2026, the City of Salem's current parking page says there will be No municipal shuttle in 2026. That supersedes the festival's 19 August press release, which still told visitors to consider satellite parking with shuttles. The free lot at 108 Jefferson Avenue remains available on October weekends and Indigenous Peoples' Day, but it is now a walk, not a park-and-ride service.

That correction matters because Haunted Happenings runs 1-31 October 2026, Halloween falls on a Saturday, and the city says downtown roads will close no later than noon on 31 October. If you are still planning the trip, build it around the commuter rail, reserve the few attractions that release timed inventory, and treat driving into central Salem as the option of last resort.

What is actually happening in Salem in October 2026?

This is Salem's 400th-anniversary year, so the official programme has more than the usual markets and costume events. The festival's 2026 announcement confirms that the opening Grand Parade leaves Shetland Park at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, 1 October and ends at Salem Common. The month then builds toward a Halloween-night finale over the North River.

10 OctoberHowl-o-ween Pet Parade10:30 a.m.; free to watch, pet registration US$5 local or US$10 visitor

17 OctoberWitch Hats on the Wharf11 a.m.; the 400th-anniversary group-photo and world-record attempt

The live October events calendar is longer than the headline programme and is still being updated. Use it to fill gaps, but verify the individual organiser's page before paying: the calendar itself warns that events can change. Free marketplaces appear throughout the month, while balls, performances and tours have separate tickets.

The 2026 transport plan: train first, car second

The city's 17 September traffic notice is unusually direct: visitors should not plan to drive into downtown Salem, especially on weekends. It recommends the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail from Boston's North Station, a journey of about 30 minutes, or the seasonal Salem Ferry. Salem station is roughly half a mile from the Peabody Essex Museum and close enough to make the compact centre a walking trip.

If you must drive, the free weekend lot at 108 Jefferson Avenue is described by the city as a five-minute walk into downtown. It has limited spaces and, despite older festival wording, no shuttle. City garages, lots and meters may switch from normal hourly pricing to flat event fees on October weekends and holidays, so there is no honest fixed parking price to budget before the city posts it.

Do not use an older shuttle guide for 2026. The city's live page explicitly says no municipal shuttle will run. The Jefferson Avenue lot is free on the specified days, but you must walk from it.

On Halloween itself, the mayor's published closure plan says Downtown roads close by 12 noon and may close earlier if crowd conditions require it. Bridge Street also closes from 9:15 to 11:30 p.m. for the drone show, and the MBTA Salem garage will not allow vehicles to enter or leave from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Those restrictions make a parked car a liability even if you find a space.

Which Salem tickets should you book now?

The House of the Seven Gables has already released its second-half October inventory to the general public. Its official ticket page says 16-31 October tickets opened on 19 September, following the 1-15 October release on 4 September. The Mansion Tour Package costs US$31 in October for an adult, US$26 for seniors and college students, US$21 for children aged 5-12, and nothing for children under five. A grounds-only pass is US$16. The usual November-to-September adult price is US$26, so the October premium is visible before checkout.

The mansion tour lasts about 45 minutes and crosses multiple levels in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century buildings. The site's visitor centre, grounds and gardens are wheelchair accessible, but the historic houses are not; an accessibility ticket costs US$16 and covers the first floor plus interpretive information about the upper floors. The attraction also offers a smartphone audio guide in several languages, including French, German, Spanish, Japanese and both Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

The Salem Witch Museum works differently. Its official visit page says tickets become available only after 10 p.m. on the night before the visit. Presentations normally begin every half-hour from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended October hours, and the museum advises allowing at least one hour. Put a 9:55 p.m. reminder in your phone rather than relying on a walk-up queue the next morning.

For a calmer historical stop, the Peabody Essex Museum charges US$25 for adults, US$23 for seniors, US$15 for students and admits visitors under 16 free. It opens Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closes Tuesday and Wednesday. General admission includes the Salem Witch Trials 1692 exhibition, but the Yin Yu Tang house needs a separate timed reservation selected during checkout. The museum suggests at least two hours for a first visit.

A one-day Salem plan that survives the crowds

Arrive by commuter rail before the centre fills. Start at the Peabody Essex Museum when its doors open, then walk toward Derby Street for a pre-booked Seven Gables slot. That order keeps the two fixed-ticket attractions ahead of the afternoon surge and leaves the waterfront, Salem Common and the outdoor markets flexible.

Choose one evening commitment, not three. On 16, 17, 23 or 24 October, the Night Faire occupies a five-hour window at Pioneer Village. On 17 October, the 11 a.m. Witch Hats gathering at Derby Wharf gives the day a natural waterfront focus. On Halloween, stay near the North River finale zone before late closures tighten rather than crossing town repeatedly.

Midweek is the best fallback when weekend lodging or tours are gone. The official festival advice says weekdays generally bring lighter crowds and shorter waits. The trade-off is that some market and special-event programming concentrates on weekends, so compare the live calendar with the attraction hours before choosing your date.

Entry rules and mobile data for international visitors

Your U.S. entry route depends on your passport and travel history. The State Department's Visa Waiver Program page says eligible nationals may visit for tourism for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA. U.S. Customs and Border Protection currently charges US$40.27 per new application and recommends applying when you book, not at the airport. A standard B visitor-visa application costs US$185 where the Visa Waiver Program does not apply, with possible nationality-specific issuance fees.

Use only the official ESTA site linked by CBP. Approval allows travel to a U.S. port of entry; it does not itself guarantee admission. If your passport does not qualify for visa-free travel, or your travel history makes you ineligible, follow the State Department's visitor-visa process and allow for the interview timetable in the place where you apply.

A travel eSIM is useful here because the final transport notices, attraction inventory and road closures are mobile-first. Check that your handset is unlocked and eSIM-capable on Roameo's compatibility checker, then compare current United States eSIM plans. Download the eSIM before departure and keep the QR code somewhere accessible offline; local network performance varies by location, crowd load and the underlying carrier.
