Try the Washington Monument's 30-day release first, then use the next-day release if the first allocation is gone. These windows do not open at the same time: 30-day inventory opens at 10am ET, while limited next-day inventory opens at 3pm ET on the day before the visit. The free same-day queue is a final fallback, but tickets are limited and typically run out.

Calculate both release dates

Start with the date you want to tour. Count back 30 calendar days for the main attempt and one calendar day for the fallback. Set the reminders in Washington's local Eastern Time, not at those clock times in your own location.

This is calendar subtraction, not a promise of availability. The National Park Service ticket page, last updated 28 May 2026, says demand often exceeds supply and advance tickets can sell out immediately. Create a Recreation.gov account and sign in before the release you intend to try.

Choose the right fallback

Same-day walk-upFree timed ticket; distribution begins at 8:45amFirst come, first served; lines form earlier and tickets typically run out.

The facility-specific Recreation.gov Washington Monument page controls the two online booking times. Advance reservations are available there or by calling 877-444-6777, but the call centre sees the same inventory and has no extra allocation. Admission is free; the US$1 amount is a non-refundable processing charge on each advance ticket.

Check every condition that could change the answer

  • Age: every visitor aged 2 or older needs an individual ticket.
  • Online quantity: each Recreation.gov account may purchase up to six tickets per day.
  • Valid entry ticket: only the Recreation.gov ticket with a valid QR code is accepted for an online reservation. Tickets are non-transferable and not for resale.
  • Changes and cancellations: reservations cannot be modified. They may be cancelled until 2pm ET on the day before the tour, but the service charge is not refunded.
  • Walk-up collection: one person aged 16 or older may collect up to six available same-day tickets at the Washington Monument Lodge. This is the only official NPS same-day distributor.
  • Groups: group tours may reserve up to 55 tickets online up to 30 days ahead. They have no walk-up option and pay the US$1 service charge per ticket.
  • Arrival: arrive before the time on the ticket. Recreation.gov recommends at least 15 minutes early and warns that late entry is not guaranteed.
  • Security and access: all visitors are screened. Weapons including pocketknives, strollers and bulky items are prohibited; wheelchairs are permitted. The ascent is by elevator, and visitors unable to use the short stairs between the observation and museum levels can ask a ranger for elevator access.
  • Closures: weather, safety or security conditions can close the monument. Entry after operations resume is not guaranteed, and affected tickets are not exchanged or refunded. The remaining scheduled 2026 closure dates listed by NPS are 11 November, 26 November and 25 December, so do not plan a tour for those dates.

The practical ladder is: 30-day release at 10am ET, next-day release at 3pm ET, then the early same-day lodge queue. The walk-up queue avoids the service charge but carries the greatest risk of leaving without a ticket.
