Calls work but travel eSIM data fails: what to check

A successful phone call proves a voice-capable line is working, not that the travel data plan is selected or connected. Dual-SIM phones can use separate lines for calls and internet. Identify which SIM placed the call, then inspect the data line and package status before changing advanced network settings.

Data line

Select the travel eSIM for mobile internet.

Plan

Check coverage, validity and remaining data.

Do not assume a home-line call confirms travel-line registration.

Confirm the data default

On iPhone, check Cellular Data; on Galaxy, SIM manager; on Pixel, Network & internet, SIMs. Select the travel profile as the mobile data line and turn Wi-Fi off briefly to test a simple website. If the phone offers automatic data switching, check whether it moved to the home SIM or is preventing the intended connection. Review the home carrier's roaming charges before enabling a fallback.

Check registration and package

Make sure the travel line is enabled, the country is included and the package validity has begun. Some travel eSIMs need data roaming enabled on that specific line to use partner networks; that does not mean enabling roaming on the home SIM. If the line has bars but no web access, compare the provider balance and follow its APN guidance only when supplied. Restarting or toggling airplane mode can refresh registration without deleting the profile.

Escalate with useful evidence

If calls still work on the home line and travel data still fails, send support the order ID, country, device model, network shown, active data SIM, roaming setting and a screenshot of any error. Avoid repeating a QR scan or factory reset. Keep a map and booking details offline while support investigates, and use a trusted Wi-Fi connection if the provider app itself cannot load.

Read the call's actual SIM

After a successful call, inspect the phone's call details or dialer line indicator. If it used your home SIM, the call provides no evidence that the travel eSIM has registered. Next select the travel eSIM for mobile data, turn Wi-Fi off and open a simple site. If the site still fails, check balance, destination coverage and roaming requirements. Avoid making several international voice calls as 'data tests'; they may create roaming charges while proving only that the home carrier works. If the travel plan includes both voice and data, record which service and network fail so support can diagnose the right component.
