Travel eSIM says SIM not supported: is your phone locked?

A phone can support eSIM hardware yet be restricted to one carrier. 'SIM not supported' or a similar activation message is a reason to check lock status, not to keep buying QR codes.

Check lock status

Use phone settings or ask the carrier that sold the device.

Confirm model support

Verify eSIM capability for this region and provider.

eSIM capability and freedom to use another carrier are separate checks.

Identify the restriction

Apple says an iPhone must be unlocked to use two different carriers with Dual SIM. Android devices can also be sold with carrier restrictions, and regional eSIM support varies by model. Check the phone's lock-status settings where available, then ask the original carrier to confirm eligibility. Do not rely only on a generic model name; variants sold in different markets can differ. If the phone is locked, the eSIM seller cannot remove that restriction by issuing another activation code.

Separate lock, hardware and code problems

A missing Add eSIM option suggests device or software support may be absent. A rejected QR can indicate an already-used or invalid code. A 'SIM not supported' message can point to a lock or provider compatibility issue. Capture the exact stage and text. Check the phone maker's eSIM compatibility guidance and the travel provider's supported-device list, then give both the model variant and carrier-lock status to support. Avoid factory resets or profile deletion until the cause is known.

If the original carrier offers an unlock, follow its official process and timing. Some carriers require account conditions to be met; these rules vary and can change. The eSIM provider may offer a refund or alternative when a locked device cannot use the product, but that is governed by its terms. A physical local SIM will usually face the same carrier lock, so switching formats alone is not a fix.

Keep a connection option

While resolving the lock, use included home roaming, a trusted Wi-Fi connection or another unlocked device if available. Save the arrival address and support contacts offline. Do not give an unknown repair shop your provider activation details or account password. Before the next trip, perform a compatibility check before purchase and verify the lock with the original carrier early enough to complete its official process.
