Hotspot connected but no internet abroad: what to check

A laptop can join your phone's hotspot even when the phone has no usable mobile data. Test the phone first, then the tethering link, before altering APN or buying another plan unnecessarily.

Find the break

Phone internet

Turn Wi-Fi off on the phone and load a small page.

Plan tethering

Check hotspot permission and selected data line.

Laptop connection

Reconnect and test a browser without VPN if appropriate.

Solve the first failed layer rather than changing every setting at once.

Prove the phone's data works

On the phone, turn Wi-Fi off and load a small webpage. If it fails, the hotspot is not the main issue: check the travel line, coverage, roaming instruction, balance and expiry. If it works, open the plan terms to confirm tethering is allowed. Apple's Personal Hotspot uses the selected cellular-data line on Dual SIM iPhones, so a phone can accidentally share home-carrier data if that line is selected. Confirm the travel line before inviting the laptop to connect.

Test the tethering link

Turn the hotspot off and on, then reconnect the laptop to the correct network with the current password. A laptop can remember an old hotspot password or a same-named network. Check that it received a connection and can load a basic webpage. If only the laptop fails, pause a work VPN or proxy for a controlled test when your policy permits it, then restore it. Some providers require a specific hotspot APN or block tethering on a particular plan; ask support for the exact product rule rather than copying APN values from an unrelated guide.

Try one other device if available. If both connected devices fail while the phone itself works, the phone hotspot or provider tethering policy is a stronger suspect. If only one laptop fails, inspect that laptop's network settings, metered status and security software. Keep testing light to avoid using a limited allowance on repeated speed checks.

Keep work moving

If the hotspot cannot be fixed promptly, use trusted Wi-Fi or another approved connection for a critical task. Save important documents offline. When contacting the eSIM provider, give the plan name, phone model, whether phone browsing works, whether tethering is explicitly included and what connected devices show. That evidence lets support distinguish a plan restriction from a local laptop problem without asking you to erase the eSIM.
