How to install an eSIM QR code when it is on the same phone
You do not always need a second screen to install a travel eSIM. The best method depends on your phone and the format your provider supplied: a direct install link, a QR image or manual activation details.
Choose the installation path
Install link supplied
Open the provider's official link on the phone and follow its activation flow.
QR in iPhone email or browser
On supported iOS versions, touch and hold the QR code and choose the eSIM action.
QR only as an image
Check your phone's add-eSIM screen for an import-from-gallery option; otherwise use a second trusted screen.
Manual details supplied
Enter the address and code exactly as the provider specifies.
Start with the provider's direct method
Read the delivery email or app screen for a one-tap installation link. If one exists, open it on the phone that will use the eSIM, over stable Wi-Fi. Confirm the carrier name or plan label before accepting installation. Keep the email available until the profile appears in cellular settings. Do not delete the message just because an installation animation finished; you may still need the plan's APN or activation instructions after arrival.
Apple says that on iOS 17.4 or later, you can touch and hold an eSIM QR code shown in the default email app or browser and choose Add eSIM. This is particularly useful when the email and phone are the same device. For older iOS versions, or if that option does not appear, use another screen to display the QR code or ask the provider for manual details. The method is device and software dependent.
Use a saved image only when the phone supports it
Some Android setup screens offer an option to select a QR image from the gallery; other phones expect the camera. Open Settings, find Add eSIM or SIM manager, and look at the options offered by your exact device. Samsung's instructions cover QR activation and model-specific SIM manager paths. If no image import appears, display the QR on a laptop or another trusted phone. Avoid uploading the code to a public QR reader or converter.
A QR code is an activation credential, not just a picture. Use the original provider email or app rather than a forwarded, compressed social image. If a code fails once, check that it belongs to the intended phone and has not already been installed. Do not keep deleting and re-adding profiles to test it: some codes can be used only once. The already-used QR code guide explains the safe recovery route.
| What you have | Try first | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Official install link | Open on the destination phone over Wi-Fi. | Use the provider's QR or manual details. |
| QR in supported iPhone email/browser | Touch and hold the QR code. | Show it on another screen. |
| Saved QR image | Look for gallery import in Add eSIM. | Use another trusted display. |
| Manual activation details | Enter them in Add eSIM as provided. | Ask support to confirm missing fields. |
Finish installation and verify the profile
After installation, give the new line a recognizable name such as the destination or provider. Check that it appears in SIM or Cellular settings. A profile can be installed before departure even when its destination network is unavailable at home; the label appearing is the installation check, not proof of overseas connectivity. Read the plan's validity trigger before leaving mobile data on for that line.
Save the support contact, plan identifier and first-arrival address offline. At the destination, choose the travel line for mobile data, follow any required data-roaming setting, and test a webpage with Wi-Fi off. If the profile never appears, follow the manufacturer's setup failure steps and contact the provider before assuming the QR can be reused.
