When should you select a travel eSIM network manually?

Automatic network selection normally chooses a permitted partner. Manual selection can help when the phone stays on a weak or unregistered network, but selecting an unrelated visible carrier will not make a plan work.

Network selection order

Check basics

Confirm country, active line, allowance and required roaming setting.

Find allowed partners

Read the plan details or ask the provider for network names.

Try one partner

Select a named network, test data, then restore automatic if needed.

A visible network can reject a SIM that has no agreement with it.

Rule out a plan mismatch first

Before opening a list of local carriers, confirm that your purchased plan covers the country and remains active. Verify that the travel eSIM is enabled, selected for data and configured for roaming as its seller directs. On arrival, allow time for registration and try airplane mode once. If no network is available in a tunnel or rural area, manual selection cannot create signal. Move to an open area or use a known Wi-Fi connection to check support instructions.

Use a named partner, not a guess

Some plans name one or more local partner networks. If automatic selection seems stuck and support recommends manual choice, open the network selection control for the travel line and turn automatic off. Choose a partner named in the order, wait for registration, then test a lightweight page outside Wi-Fi. Record the network name and result. Avoid trying every carrier in the list: many may be visible but not authorized for your plan, producing a rejection that does not diagnose the underlying issue.

If the chosen network works only in one town, return to automatic selection before a long journey unless the provider says otherwise. A manual lock can stop the phone switching to another permitted partner when coverage changes. Network names sometimes differ between marketing pages and device menus; ask support to clarify rather than changing APN or deleting the eSIM. For dual-SIM phones, make sure you are editing the travel line, not the home line.

Escalate with useful evidence

Send the provider your current city, phone model, plan order, selected data line, allowed network attempted and exact registration message. Do not send the full QR code publicly. If another network works on your home line, that only proves the phone can see cellular service; it does not prove the travel plan is authorized on that network. Keep an offline map and arrival address available while troubleshooting. The best manual setting is a temporary diagnostic step with a clear path back to automatic choice.
