Travel eSIM disappeared after a restart: what should you check?

A normal restart should not be treated as an instruction to reinstall the eSIM. The line may be disabled, renamed or no longer selected for data. Check the phone's full SIM list and provider account first. If the profile truly is absent, ask the provider about reissue rather than assuming the QR remains reusable.

Check state before reinstalling

List

Open every SIM or Cellular plan entry.

Enable

Select the travel line and mobile data role.

Escalate

If absent, ask provider about the installed profile.

A profile may remain installed even when no package or signal is available.

Look in the right settings

On iPhone, open Cellular or Mobile Data and inspect all plans, including lines labelled Secondary or Business. On Android, inspect SIMs or SIM manager. A line name can change after an update or transfer, so compare provider or ICCID details if available. Check that airplane mode is off and that the correct data line is selected. Do not judge profile presence only by the signal icon at the top of the screen.

Separate profile from service

An installed profile may be disabled, outside coverage, expired or waiting to register on a partner network. Read the provider account for the package status, destination list and remaining data. If the line is present but inactive, follow the provider's activation and roaming instructions. If the line is entirely absent after a reset or repair, save the exact device model and order information for support. Avoid deleting another installed line by mistake.

Request reissue when necessary

Many eSIM activation codes are single-use or device-bound. Repeatedly scanning an old QR can produce an already-used error without restoring service. Ask the provider whether it can reissue the plan to the same or a replacement phone. Use trusted Wi-Fi while resolving access. If you must travel before the issue is fixed, preserve offline maps, tickets and a voice-capable fallback rather than making an untested plan your only connection.

Do not confuse signal with installation

The status bar can display the home SIM's signal even while the travel eSIM is turned off, and it may display no usable bars for a travel line outside its covered country. Neither view tells you whether the eSIM profile is installed. Open the full SIM list and compare labels or identifiers with the provider order. If the profile is present, diagnose coverage and activation. If it is absent, document when the disappearance followed a reset, repair or transfer. That history helps the provider decide whether a replacement code is required. Repeated scanning before checking the line can make the situation harder to understand.
