Why does the internet fail only when a VPN is on abroad?
If a basic page loads with the VPN off but fails with it on, the mobile plan may be fine. Diagnose the VPN separately before resetting the eSIM or buying another data package.

Reconnect the VPN and try the same page. Record the exact error and whether the VPN tunnel says connected. This two-step test is more informative than a speed test or repeated phone restart. Check the VPN's own requirements
An employer VPN can block use from a country, require a new authentication step or fail when the server is down. Contact IT through the approved channel rather than changing a managed configuration. A personal VPN may need an app update, different server or renewed subscription. Avoid installing an unknown VPN from an airport advertisement as a quick fix. Public Wi-Fi and mobile data are separate networks; a VPN that works on hotel Wi-Fi can still fail over mobile, so note which connection produced the problem.
Check whether the VPN is configured as always-on or has a block-without-VPN setting. Such a setting can make the phone appear offline even when mobile data works underneath. Do not remove a corporate profile without authorization. On a personal device, pause the VPN briefly only if safe for the task, test the underlying connection and restore the protection afterward. If the site works in one browser but not another, clear the app-specific cause before touching SIM settings.

Keep a work fallback
For an important meeting, test the company tunnel over the actual travel eSIM before the call and know a trusted Wi-Fi venue. Save essential documents offline. If the VPN fails but the eSIM works, support needs the country, network type, app version, error text and whether another connection succeeds. Do not share passwords or security codes while troubleshooting. The fastest route to a fix is knowing which layer failed.
