Travel eSIM not working? Find the cause
Start with the symptom you can see. An eSIM that will not install, an installed line with no signal, and a line with bars but no internet need different fixes.
Check Wi-Fi, unlock and code status.
Check line, destination and activation.
Check data line, roaming and provider settings.
First: identify which stage failed
If the travel eSIM does not appear in your SIM settings at all, this is an installation or compatibility problem. If it appears but has no service, check whether the line is enabled, the plan covers the current country, and its activation window has started. If the phone shows a network but pages do not load, check which line is selected for mobile data and whether the provider requires roaming or an APN setting. These symptoms lead to different support questions; writing down the exact message saves time.
| What you see | Check first | Escalate with |
|---|---|---|
| QR code rejected or eSIM cannot be added | Wi-Fi, exact phone support, carrier unlock, code usage | Screenshot of error and device EID through secure support |
| Installed line with no bars | Line enabled, covered destination, validity start, airplane mode | Location, plan ID and network shown in settings |
| Bars but no web access | Selected data line, provider's roaming and APN instructions | Data-line screen and a failed page test with Wi-Fi off |
| Data works but SMS code does not arrive | Home line and home-carrier roaming service | Which phone number the service texted |
If the eSIM will not install
Connect to stable Wi-Fi and check that the phone software is current enough for the provider's setup method. Confirm that the phone can add an eSIM and is unlocked for another carrier. On iPhone, Apple suggests toggling Airplane Mode, checking whether the line appears under Cellular, restarting, and checking carrier settings if setup fails. Its eSIM setup troubleshooting also recommends collecting the error, IMEI or EID before contacting the provider. Share identifiers only with the provider's official support channel.
A QR code can be single-use or bound to a particular account, depending on the provider. Do not keep scanning it on multiple phones. If a code says already used, ask the issuing provider to check its activation state. Do not delete an installed profile hoping the same code will reinstall; obtain explicit provider instructions first. A carrier lock cannot be solved by another scan.
If the line installs but has no signal
Open SIM settings and make sure the travel line is enabled. Check that you are physically in a covered country and that the plan is within its valid period. Some plans start on installation, others on first connection or a specified date; use the actual offer terms. Toggle Airplane Mode once and allow a few minutes for network registration. If the provider names a partner network, follow its network-selection instructions rather than guessing. Google's Pixel connectivity guide begins with mobile-data and SIM settings and directs unresolved SIM errors to the carrier.
Test in an area with ordinary mobile coverage. A basement or train tunnel can hide a correct setup. If the home SIM also lacks service, check whether the device itself is in Airplane Mode or has a broader radio problem. Keep the home line available if you need it for support or verification, while watching its roaming cost.
If there are bars but no internet
Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and confirm that Travel, not Home, is selected for mobile data. Check whether the travel provider asks you to enable data roaming on the travel line; many eSIMs connect through partner networks, but the requirement is plan-specific. Keep home-line roaming off if you intend to avoid home data charges. If the provider supplies an APN, compare it character by character with the phone setting. Do not enter an APN copied from a different provider or country.
Try a plain web page rather than relying on one app, then restore Wi-Fi if you need support. If the page still does not load, provide the plan ID, current country, device model, line status and screenshots of the relevant settings to the provider. For a Roameo plan, use Roameo support. Do not post a QR code or account details publicly. Once service works, test a map and a message before leaving the airport; the phone preparation guide covers that arrival check.
