Family travel data planner
Work out what each phone needs before choosing a separate eSIM or relying on one phone’s hotspot.
Find a useful usage baseline
On an iPhone, open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data and check the period behind the counter. The counter can cover the time since its last reset, so do not assume the displayed total is a month. On Pixel, check the mobile-data usage period in network settings. A carrier’s usage report can provide a clearer dated period.
A phone that used 8 GB over 30 days projects 1.87 GB over seven days. Adding 20% gives 2.24 GB, rounded up here to 2.5 GB. A second phone using 15 GB over 30 days projects 3.5 GB, then 4.5 GB after the same buffer and rounding. Their combined target is 7 GB across two phones.
Home usage can understate travel demand if you usually have Wi-Fi. Downloads, video calls, uploads and hotspot devices can change the pace. Include hotspot traffic only once, on the host phone; do not add the same traffic again as a separate device allowance.
Check each phone’s compatibility, trip-wide plan validity, hotspot permission and fair-use terms. If the group splits up, everyone relying on one hotspot loses access when the host phone leaves.
