Geneva Airport to the City: Train or Bus, and Is It Free?
The airport-to-city train and bus share Geneva zone 10, but the old free arrival ticket ended. Choose by final stop, hotel card eligibility and arrival time.

An old Geneva airport tip still circulates: collect a free public transport ticket on arrival. The airport’s current FAQ says that free arrival ticket ended on 1 January 2022. For a 2026 city arrival, choose your route using the hotel address instead. The train is a seven-minute ride to Geneva-Cornavin and is ideal for a stop near the main station. A city bus can spare a second transfer when it runs closer to your accommodation. Both fit Geneva’s zone 10 ticket rules; the right vehicle depends on where the journey finishes.
The train is fast to Cornavin, not to every door
Geneva Airport says all trains from its station stop at Geneva-Cornavin, the principal city-centre rail station. It gives a seven-minute ride and a peak frequency of about every twelve minutes. The airport railway station is about a five-minute walk from arrivals or departures according to its FAQ. Those figures make the train a clear default for a traveler whose hotel is at Cornavin or whose onward Swiss rail journey starts there. They do not turn every Geneva address into a seven-minute airport trip. Add the station walk, possible wait, exit route and any final tram, bus or hotel walk before comparing choices.
At the airport, follow the railway symbols for the SBB/CFF station and use the station display for the next train stopping at Cornavin. Since all trains serve that stop, the departure display is more useful than memorizing a particular train brand. The city station name may appear as Genève, Genève-Cornavin or Geneva-Cornavin in different interfaces. If your accommodation is near the station, save its walking directions in advance. A river crossing, steep route or a long walk with luggage can change the practical answer even though the rail ride itself is short.
When a bus is the better first vehicle
The airport says TPG city buses serve stops at the check-in level beside or in front of the rail station, with a peak frequency of eight to fifteen minutes. A bus can be a more direct route to a neighborhood beyond Cornavin, especially when it passes a stop near your hotel and avoids transferring after the train. The specific line matters more than a broad “airport bus” label. Find your hotel’s nearest stop, then check the TPG journey planner for a line from Genève-Aéroport. A direct bus that takes longer on board may still finish sooner at the hotel entrance.
One sensible comparison is to draw both complete routes. The rail route is airport walk, platform wait, seven-minute ride, then final leg from Cornavin. The bus route is airport bus stop, wait, onboard journey and final walk. If you carry a heavy suitcase or travel with someone who needs a step-free route, the location of the correct stop and interchange deserves as much attention as the timetable. Do not infer that every TPG bus goes to Cornavin or that every bus is a shuttle with a special airport fare. Use the line-specific route shown by the operator.
The ticket that works on both
The airport states that a unireso zone 10 ticket costs CHF 3 and is valid for 60 minutes on TPG buses and SBB/CFF trains within the relevant Geneva zone. It lists ticket machines at the Genève-Aéroport and WTC bus stops and at the airport rail station. TPG explains that unireso joins the canton’s principal public transport operators and that zone 10 tickets cover its bus, tram, rail and lake-shuttle network within the zone. This is why you do not need to treat the train and urban bus as separate airport products for an ordinary zone 10 city trip.
Read the destination boundary before using that rule. TPG distinguishes unireso zone 10 from Léman Pass travel into nearby France and from national Swiss rail travel beyond the local zone. A hotel across the border, an onward trip into Vaud, or a longer Swiss journey is not made valid by a CHF 3 city ticket. Choose the ticket matching the full trip in the planner. If your Geneva hotel is inside the city, the 60-minute local ticket can accommodate a sensible train-to-bus or train-to-tram continuation within its validity, but check the proposed journey time before boarding.
The hotel card can change the fare, with a condition
Geneva Airport says a guest staying in a hotel, youth hostel or campsite in Geneva may receive a Geneva Transport Card from the accommodation. It covers public transport in zone 10 during the stay, including the rail journey between Cornavin and the airport. That is a useful benefit, but the phrase “may receive” and the need for an actual card matter. Contact the accommodation before arrival to ask whether it issues the card and when the validity begins. Do not board on the assumption that a room reservation email is automatically a travel ticket unless the property has confirmed its procedure.
This hotel-card rule is distinct from the former free arrival ticket. The airport explicitly says the free arrival ticket was withdrawn in 2022. A current card issued through qualifying accommodation may cover an airport journey during its valid stay; an arriving passenger without that card needs a valid fare. If the hotel supplies a digital card before check-in, follow its instructions and keep it accessible for inspection. If the property issues the card only at reception, buy the arrival ticket first. Those small timing differences are exactly where recycled advice tends to mislead travelers.
A worked choice for two different hotels
Consider a traveler staying near Cornavin with a single cabin bag. The airport rail station is a short walk from the terminal, the train takes seven minutes to Cornavin, and the hotel is close to that station. The train is the cleanest plan. The traveler verifies whether a hotel card is already valid; otherwise they buy a zone 10 ticket at the airport station before boarding. Now consider a traveler whose hotel is near a direct TPG airport bus stop but requires a second connection from Cornavin. That traveler should compare the direct bus’s actual departure and endpoint with the train-plus-transfer route. The longer bus ride may be simpler and can use the same zone 10 ticket.
Neither example justifies quoting a universal door-to-door time. The airport publishes peak frequencies, but a late flight, weekend timetable or temporary works can change waiting time. The hotel address and journey planner are the final arbiters. Before you fly, save the property’s directions and ticket instructions offline. If you want live timetable access after landing, check eSIM device compatibility and relevant plans through Roameo destinations; connectivity depends on device and network conditions, so also keep the route screenshot.
If you are continuing immediately to another Swiss canton, start a fresh search with that destination rather than treating Cornavin as the end of the journey. A national rail ticket may make an airport-origin train itinerary simpler than buying a separate zone 10 ticket and then another ticket at Cornavin. Likewise, an address across the French border changes the applicable fare system. This is especially important when a Geneva hotel name sounds central but its actual street address is in a neighboring municipality. Enter the full address and confirm the fare zones before using the city-ticket example above.
Avoid two misleading uses of “free”
Geneva Airport also describes tpgAérobus: a free, early-morning service from parts of the city toward the airport for departing flight passengers with a same-day airline ticket or boarding pass. That is not the old free arrival ticket and not a general substitute for a citybound train after landing. The airport describes a separate hotel transport card for eligible stays. Keep the direction and eligibility attached to each claim. If you are arriving for a visit, do not plan on an outbound early-morning service; if you are leaving very early, check whether its route actually serves your pickup area.
The reliable decision in October 2026 is therefore straightforward: first locate your hotel relative to Cornavin and the direct airport bus stops; then establish whether you already hold a valid hotel card; then buy the correct zone 10 or cross-border ticket. Train and bus share the local fare system, so route convenience is usually the decisive factor. Recheck the official airport and TPG pages close to travel, because services and ticket terms can change after an article is written.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still get a free ticket from a machine after landing in Geneva?
No. Geneva Airport says its former free arrival bus/train ticket was discontinued on 1 January 2022. A valid Geneva Transport Card from eligible accommodation is a separate benefit.
Is the airport train ticket different from the city bus ticket?
For an ordinary journey within Geneva zone 10, the airport says the CHF 3, 60-minute unireso ticket works on both TPG buses and SBB/CFF trains. Cross-border and longer-distance trips need the appropriate fare.
Does the seven-minute airport train take me to my hotel?
Seven minutes is the published train ride to Cornavin. Include the station walk, wait and any onward travel or hotel walk when comparing it with a direct bus.
