How to download offline maps before a trip
A downloaded map gives you a route-finding fallback when the travel data line is slow, late to activate, or out of coverage. Save the area and test it before departure.
Which area should you download?
Include your arrival airport or station, the first accommodation, and the route between them. Add any place you must reach before you expect reliable service: a meeting point, ferry terminal, medical facility or car-rental desk. For a long trip, save several smaller areas rather than assuming one city download covers a day trip beyond its edge. Keep the written address and booking reference separately, because a map cannot replace the information you need to show a driver or ticket agent.
Check the file size while on Wi-Fi. Apple lets you adjust the map area before download; a smaller area uses less storage. Google lets you select your own area. Both services have regional limitations, so verify that the particular destination offers an offline download before you depend on it. Sources: Apple offline maps and Google Maps offline areas.
How to save a map on iPhone
In Apple Maps, search for a place and choose Download when available, or open your profile picture → Offline Maps → Add Offline Map. Adjust the area to include the full arrival route, then download it. Apple says offline maps are available in iOS 17 and later in selected areas. They can show place details and directions, but features vary by country and region. If a Download action does not appear, do not assume the area is stored simply because it is visible on screen.
Open Offline Maps again and confirm the area appears. Check available storage and whether automatic updates are enabled. An old download may not reflect a new road or transit change, so refresh it near departure. If you use both Apple Maps and Google Maps, save the area in the app you will actually open at the airport.
How to save a map in Google Maps
On your phone, open Google Maps while connected, search for the destination and choose Download offline map from the place options if available. You can also tap your profile picture → Offline maps → Select your own map. Move and zoom the selection to cover your route, then download. Google says downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions because of licensing, language or address-format limits. A saved map may expire or need updating; check it shortly before travel.
| Need | Offline plan | When live data still helps |
|---|---|---|
| Find the hotel and nearby streets | Download the arrival area and save the address | Recent business or road changes may need a refresh. |
| Driving route | Test it inside the downloaded area | Google says traffic and alternative routes are unavailable offline. |
| Public transport or walking route | Save route notes or a screenshot as backup | Google says offline transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable. |
| Contact transport or accommodation | Save phone numbers and booking details separately | Calling, messaging and live status need a connection. |
Test before you travel
Turn on Airplane Mode, turn Wi-Fi off, and open the map app. Search for the hotel and try the route you expect to use. If it cannot find the location or the route leaves the saved area, enlarge or add another download. Then restore your phone settings. This test also reveals if the app was merely displaying cached tiles rather than a deliberate offline area.
Offline maps are a backup, not a reason to leave the connection unprepared. A working travel data plan helps with live delays, messages and changes after landing. Use the phone preparation guide for the rest of the setup, and the data estimate if you want to plan the allowance. Save a copy of your passport, tickets and first-night address as described in the packing checklist.
