One app fails on your travel eSIM while the internet works: what next?

If maps and websites load but one airline, bank or work app does not, buying more data is unlikely to fix that app. Check its sign-in, permissions, service status and VPN behavior. Keep the eSIM profile installed while you identify the failing layer.

App-only diagnosis

General web

Load two unrelated secure websites.

App

Read the exact error and check sign-in.

Network layer

Test VPN or private DNS only when relevant.

Change one setting at a time so you know what restored service.

Prove the connection works

Turn Wi-Fi off and load a normal website over the travel eSIM. Try a second unrelated site. If both load, the line has working data even if a specific app fails. Check the provider balance only to rule out a nearly exhausted plan. If no sites load, use the general bars-but-no-internet troubleshooting path instead of changing the app.

Check the app and account

Open the app's official status page when available, then inspect whether you are signed in, whether a session expired or whether a fresh verification prompt is hidden. Some apps restrict access by country or need an ordinary SMS sent to an account number. On iPhone, verify cellular data is allowed for that app; on Android, check its data and background settings. Update the app on trusted Wi-Fi if a current version is required.

Check overlays carefully

A VPN, private DNS, filtering app or corporate policy can affect one service while general browsing appears normal. If you are allowed to do so, briefly test with the overlay disabled, then restore it and ask the relevant support team for a proper fix. Do not bypass work security policy or share login details with the eSIM provider. Save a screenshot of the exact error and time, and use the app provider's support route when the network is demonstrably working.

Record a clean comparison

A useful comparison uses the same phone and app within a few minutes: test the app on mobile data, then on trusted Wi-Fi, while noting whether a VPN is on. Also open an unrelated website on each connection. If only the app fails on both networks, look at its login or service status. If it fails only over mobile data, check the app's cellular permission, VPN and any country restriction. Avoid clearing app storage or reinstalling immediately; that may remove downloaded tickets or require a verification text you cannot receive abroad. Save the exact error and app version before making changes.
