How to save travel eSIM activation details safely
The eSIM receipt is useful when you lose connectivity, but its QR code or activation details may act like a credential. Save what you need to recover the order and protect the code itself.
Keep and protect
Order reference
Save the plan name, support route and purchase email for offline access.
Activation code
Keep it private; do not post a QR image in a public chat or review.
Validity terms
Save the country list and start rule shown at purchase.
Record the information you may need offline
Before departure, save the order number, plan name, country list, data allowance, expiry rule and support contact in an offline note or secure document. A screenshot of the confirmation page can help when email will not load at an airport. Check that the screenshot actually opens without a connection. If you share travel plans with a companion, send only the details they need; they usually do not need your activation QR or account login.
Protect the activation method
An eSIM QR code, carrier link or manual activation string is tied to a purchase and may be single-use. Store it in a protected email account or password manager, not in a public album or social post. Do not forward it to someone offering unsolicited support. After installation, keep the original message until the trip ends, because provider support may ask for its order information. But do not assume scanning the same code on a new phone will transfer service; ask the provider for its supported transfer process.
If you must use another device to display the QR, choose a trusted screen and remove the image afterward. Some phones can install a QR shown in their own browser or email, making a second device unnecessary. Follow the phone maker's current method for your software version. When a code fails, save the exact error rather than repeatedly publishing or sharing the QR to seek help.
| Item | Suggested location | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Order reference | Offline note or saved receipt | Depending on live email only. |
| QR or activation code | Protected account or manager | Public posts or shared albums. |
| Support contact | Offline note | Searching only after data fails. |
| Plan terms | Receipt screenshot | Assuming all products have the same rules. |
Prepare for lost access
Make sure you can sign in to the provider account without the very SMS service you are replacing. Configure a recovery method for your email and important accounts before travel. If the phone is lost, an order reference and support contact are more useful than a QR image alone, because the provider may need to suspend or reissue the profile. Keep a separate copy of your arrival address and important contacts; the eSIM receipt should not be your only offline travel record.
