Should you install a travel eSIM with an app or QR code?
An app, QR code and manual activation details are different ways to install a provider-issued eSIM profile. They do not change the plan's coverage or data allowance. Use the method the seller supports for your device, and avoid beginning the same single-use activation on two phones.
Three installation routes
Provider app
Convenient when the app supports the phone and account.
QR code
Easy with another screen or printed code.
Manual details
Useful when scanning is impossible and provider supplies codes.
Choose the official path
Apple documents QR, provider app and manual-entry options for iPhone; Google and Samsung provide similar supported paths on eligible devices. Follow the instructions attached to your exact order, because a provider may require its app to authenticate or may give only a QR. Download apps from the official store and sign in before departure. A screenshot of a QR sent to the same phone can require a second display or a built-in photo-scanning route depending on device software.
Keep the activation controlled
Connect to stable Wi-Fi, charge the phone and use the intended device. If a code fails, record the error message and check whether a profile was actually created in Settings before trying again. A repeated scan may say 'already used' because the installation partly completed or because the code is bound to another device. Do not paste activation details into a public support forum. If the email is missing, confirm the order status and address in the provider account.
| Method | Best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Provider app | Account and app work | Sign-in required |
| QR code | Second screen available | Single-use code |
| Manual entry | Provider gave full details | Typing mistakes |
| Transfer | Provider supports device move | Old profile status |
Verify after the profile appears
A visible eSIM line does not prove the paid package is active at your destination. Label the line, review the validity start rule and select it for data when appropriate. After arriving in a covered country, follow the provider's data-roaming instruction and test a simple website with Wi-Fi off. Keep the home line's call and SMS settings deliberate. If the plan never connects, send support the order ID, device model, installed-line status and current network rather than another QR scan.
Choose the route for your situation
Use the provider app when it is the seller's documented method and you can sign in on the intended phone. Use a QR when the order supplies one and you have another screen or supported same-device import. Use manual details only when the provider supplies the complete activation information. None of these methods should be mixed mid-installation just because the progress screen pauses briefly. First check whether the line already appears in Settings. If it does, focus on activation and network registration; if it does not, capture the installation error for support. Keep all codes private because they can be tied to your paid order.
