Travel eSIM QR code will not scan: what to try first
A QR that the camera cannot read is different from one that scans but the provider rejects. Start with the physical scan, then the phone's supported installation route. Keep the code private and do not attempt it on a second phone unless that is the intended device.
Where does scanning stop?
No recognition
Improve lighting, size and screen contrast.
Link opens, then fails
Record the exact activation error.
No second screen
Use supported photo or manual-entry method.
Fix the image first
Display the original QR at a comfortable size on another screen or print it clearly. Clean the camera lens, reduce glare and increase screen brightness without washing out the code. Make sure all four corners are visible; cropped email previews can remove the required quiet border. Use the phone's Add eSIM flow rather than assuming any generic QR reader will install a mobile plan. If the code is on the same phone, check the manufacturer's supported photo import or manual-entry route.
Switch methods only if supported
Apple documents installing an eSIM via QR, provider app or manually supplied details; Samsung and Pixel have their own eligible-device flows. If your order includes an activation address and code, enter them only through the phone's official cellular settings. Do not invent missing fields or paste them into a public QR decoder. If the provider offers an app-based installation, ensure you are signed in to the correct order before starting it.
| Symptom | Likely layer | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Camera sees nothing | Image/display | Resize and remove glare |
| No Add eSIM option | Device/software | Check compatibility |
| Code recognized, rejected | Activation | Contact provider |
| Line already present | Partial setup | Inspect SIM settings |
Escalate the right error
If the scan recognizes the code but activation says invalid, already used or unavailable, stop repeated scans. Check whether the line was partly installed in SIM settings and whether the phone is unlocked. Send support the order ID, device model and exact error, not a public copy of the QR. A replacement code may be needed; reinstalling the same single-use code is not guaranteed. Keep Wi-Fi available until the provider confirms the profile is installed.
Make the scan test reproducible
Use the original order email or provider account rather than a heavily compressed messaging-app copy of the QR. Open the code on a second device at full resolution, set moderate brightness, clean the phone camera and hold it steady far enough to see the entire square. If the camera reads other QR codes but not this one, the image may be damaged. If it reads the code and then shows an activation error, the scan itself succeeded; save that error for support. Do not publish the QR online for someone else to inspect, because it can grant access to the paid profile.
