A Melbourne Airport arrival offers two very different bus strategies for a city stay. SkyBus Melbourne City Express goes to Southern Cross Station on its own ticket. Public bus Route 901 serves Broadmeadows Station, where you can continue by train using myki. The question is not simply which bus is cheaper or faster; it is which chain of journeys reaches your hotel with acceptable walking, waiting and ticket complexity. Transport Victoria's airport guide describes the 901 and stop location, while SkyBus lists its City Express ticket terms.
Choose your city endpoint first
SkyBus City Express is built around Southern Cross Station. If your hotel is near that station, or your next service leaves from it, the express coach offers a simple one-vehicle airport-to-city trip. If your room is elsewhere, the coach ride is only the first leg. You may still need a city train, tram, local bus, walk or taxi. Look up the hotel entrance and nearest usable stop before deciding that “the city” is a single destination. The station is convenient for some itineraries and an unnecessary detour for others.
Route 901 is a public bus with a different purpose. Transport Victoria lists Broadmeadows among its stops and identifies the airport stop at the Melbourne Airport bus interchange on the ground floor of the T4 car park. A passenger using the 901 for central Melbourne would normally change to a train at Broadmeadows. That added change is central to the decision. It can be worthwhile if the rail line or a stop on the 901's own route suits your destination, but a traveler with heavy luggage should judge the transfer and final walk as part of the real cost.
The airport's Terminal 4 guide also distinguishes SkyBus and public bus pickup. Do not assume the two buses share one queue or ticket booth. Follow the current airport signs for the service you chose, especially if arriving at a terminal other than T4. A terminal-to-stop walk can matter as much as a timetable difference when a group has bags or limited mobility. Check the current route and bay information on travel day, because forecourt arrangements and disruptions can change.
Two ticket systems, two kinds of flexibility
SkyBus says City Express one-way fares cover travel between Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and Southern Cross Station. It sells return fares and says tickets are valid for 12 months from purchase unless otherwise indicated. Its online purchase instructions require an accessible email address and mobile number, with tickets delivered by email; a mobile ticket can be shown when boarding. Its ticket is not a myki fare. If you need another public-transport ride after Southern Cross, include that separately in the journey budget rather than assuming the SkyBus ticket transfers onto a tram or train.
The 901, by contrast, requires myki, according to Transport Victoria. The same source says public transport to and from the airport uses myki while other bus services have their own booking systems. A traveler planning the 901–train connection should make sure a usable myki is ready before boarding and should consult the current fare guide for the applicable two-hour or daily cap. This is especially useful if other Melbourne public-transport trips follow on the same day. Victoria says public transport is half price from June 2026 until 1 January 2027, excluding SkyBus, with a full-fare weekday daily cap of AUD 5.70. The current ticket page lists a weekend cap of AUD 4.00; this dated promotion is a reason to check the official fare page for this autumn trip. Avoid comparing an old screenshot of a SkyBus fare with a newer myki price; ticket conditions and fares can change independently.
SkyBus's own purchase page highlights a return offer at AUD 21.70 each way and says the service operates between 4 a.m. and 1 a.m. seven days a week, with a timetable check before purchase. That offer is for a return ticket used by one person, not two people sharing one return. Because online fare widgets can vary by passenger type and promotion, use the checkout price for your actual travel party. A child, concession or senior ticket can have proof requirements; the operator says proof must be available when boarding for eligible tickets. Do not budget a discount merely because someone in the party is older or a student without checking the accepted identification.
Time is more than the express label
SkyBus is the fewer-transfer route to Southern Cross, and its operator says to check the timetable. Public Route 901 adds a rail change at Broadmeadows for most central-city destinations. Transport Victoria says the 901 runs seven days a week, about every 15 minutes during busy weekday periods and about every 30 minutes at other times and on weekends. Those are service patterns, not a promise that a bus will be waiting just after your flight. Add realistic time for baggage claim, the walk to the interchange, waiting, the bus ride, the Broadmeadows change, the train ride and the final walk.
The reverse journey also needs separate planning. If your flight is early, the airport arrival deadline is driven by airline check-in and security, not by the nominal duration of a bus ride. Check the first departure of every leg, including the train that reaches Broadmeadows, and leave a buffer for missed connections. The SkyBus page states a broad operating window; it does not make every minute within that window equally frequent. For the 901, use the live Transport Victoria route page to check your direction and stops.
Worked choices for different stays
Imagine a solo visitor with a small suitcase staying a short walk from Southern Cross. SkyBus can take them to the useful city endpoint on one ticket. The public route would involve walking to the T4 interchange, boarding 901, changing at Broadmeadows and then walking from a city rail stop. Even if the myki trip costs less, the transfer may have little value for this particular destination. The visitor should still compare the current ticket checkout, because a return offer only helps if they will use both rides under its terms.
Now imagine a traveler staying near a station on the rail route reached from Broadmeadows, with a myki already in hand and no awkward bags. The 901–train option may line up better with the hotel than a coach to Southern Cross followed by backtracking. They can check the exact station, train direction and final walk before deciding. If a train disruption is shown, however, the apparent geographic advantage may disappear. The route choice should be made with that day's service information, not only a static map.
For a family with children, several suitcases and a room beyond both endpoints, compare the total path door to door. SkyBus may reduce one connection but still leave a long final transfer. The 901 may use one ticket system for public transport but requires a bus–train change. A direct taxi or other licensed vehicle might also deserve comparison if the group and luggage fit, although that is a separate purchase. Count luggage handling, ticket eligibility and the final walk as real burdens. A few dollars saved on the first leg is not automatically a better journey for the whole party.
Practical arrival checklist
Save your hotel address, nearest station and terminal before departure. For SkyBus, confirm the City Express timetable, your airport pickup point and the ticket terms shown at checkout. For 901, locate the T4 car park ground-floor interchange, confirm the Broadmeadows change and have myki ready. On the day, check disruption notices and the final service that can get you to the hotel. A data connection helps with live routing and electronic tickets; check phone compatibility and compare eSIM plans before you travel, while remembering that Roameo resells access on local networks and does not promise coverage or speed at every stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Route 901 run directly to Southern Cross?
No. For a city-center trip, use its Broadmeadows connection to the rail network and confirm the onward train.
Can I use myki on SkyBus City Express?
No. SkyBus sells its own ticket for the City Express service; myki applies to Route 901 and eligible public transport.
Where is the 901 stop at Melbourne Airport?
Transport Victoria places it at the bus interchange on the ground floor of the T4 car park. Check current airport signs for your terminal's walking route.
